Talpa Studios' The Floor secures major international renewals Following the recent announcement of a second and third season in the USA, Talpa Studios hit show The Floor continues its global success with recommissions in three major territories: Italy, France and Germany. Blu Yazmine will produce the show for RAI2 in Italy, and Satisfaction Group will handle production for France Télévisions. In Germany, Cheerio Entertainment will oversee production, and the show will air on SAT.1. As with the first season, the second German season will be recorded at Talpa Studios' local production hub in the Netherlands. The Floor's ongoing success is attributed to its innovative structure, high play-along factor and continuous format revisions that keep it fresh and exciting. Its flexible structure has allowed it to thrive in both daily and weekly schedules, catering to diverse viewing habits. About #TheFloor In The Floor, 100 quiz fanatics face off in quiz duels on a giant LED floor divided into one hundred equal squares, each representing its own field of knowledge. The goal is to conquer the entire floor and take home a huge cash prize. The rules are simple. A random contestant challenges an adjoining opponent in a quiz duel. They play against each other in the category of the opponent's square. Categories range from 'famous athletes' to 'Hollywood actors' and from ‘iconic buildings’ to 'mammals'. Some questions are visually supported by photographs, others by sound, while other duels focus on open questions, multiple choice, association: the possibilities are endless. The winner of a duel conquers his opponent's square, gaining more ground - the loser leaves the game. The further the game progresses, the more exciting the duels become and the higher the stakes. The NBA is really killing it with its D2C platform in France. But they also have long time partners in the country with beIN SPORTS France and an upcoming one on many international markets, including France, with Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios. It shows that a rights owner shouldn't have to choose between going D2C or staying with traditionnal media partners. in most cases, if not all, it should be both. Exclusivity doesn't command the same premium as before in most markets outside of the US. Positive ROI through media rights are harder to find for both partners and broadcasters alike. Live sports is competing with many forms of entertainment and when it comes to younger demographics it has largely been loosing this battle. It's not about D2C vs B2B, Free vs Pay, Linear vs Streaming. It's everything together all at once. I think it should really be the basic approach to tackling the current disruption.

Very good insight! I agree, the landscape is shifting. Adapt or die. As a TV and movie production company we can align with the streaming platforms, and with half a dozen companies reach HALF of the entire world's population. By doing so we can also control our own destiny and costs. That is alluring. The media distribution marketplace will dramatically change in the next 36 months. Is there a place for cinema, theatres, streaming, and other alternative delivery methods to co-exist? Time will tell, we all adapt, we all evolve, that is the nature of business. Here is a prelude of things to come...

TV BUNDLING: Here is a Paris 2024 themed TVC from Xfinity in the US. It socialises Xfinity's recently launched 'StreamSaver' bundle which for an additional USD $15 a month on top of any qualifying TV or internet plan (Equiv. of EUR €13.81, GBP £11.66, AUD $22.90 and ZAR R274.71) provides access to Peacock Premium with ads, Apple TV+ and Netflix Standard with ads. The offer is significant since these products, if purchased individually, would total USD $24.97 a month. The TVC also positions Xfinity TV as a way to 'Find your shows, all in one place' illustrating voice search with the command 'Show me Paris'. The USD $35 bundle proposed here is for a relatively basic 150Mbit home internet service, plus a free 5G phone on Xfinity mobile with one unlimited mobile line. Its clearly there to undermine the agressive competition of FWA home internet from T-Mobile at USD $50 per month. The 'unlimited' nature of Xfinity's mobile plan does require some clarification, with T&Cs referring to reduced speeds after a 30Gb mobile data cap is exceeded. Like many, I love a good chat about codecs! With Allan McLennan and Romain Bouqueau we covered a lot of ground, not just the headline #GPAC usecases in our chat. We delved into codec use over time, using HEVC, HEIF, LCEVC as well as the move to VR glasses including the Apple Vision Pro. We spoke about the increased need for speed in distributing production material, highlighted Fred Dawson's skills in writing and explored MPEG standardisation, #sustainability, innovating advertising, end-to-end #metadata workflows, and of course how Meta's #instragram cut their encoding workload by 94%! It was great fun, so thanks to Allan and Romain!

At this week’s ASBU BroadcastPro Middle East Summit in Dubai an interesting panel discussion topic was “Transforming the Entertainment Experience with Cloud, AI, Data and Tech Innovations", moderated by suhail ahmed with C Level panelists Bradley Eliot Faraz Arshad Israel Esteban Martí Romary Dupuis William Sharp Summary below (take with traditional pen & paper ✒ ). Optimising cost is a primary function with AI as of today along with behaviour analysis for targeted advertisements, with content creation being the longer term return on investment. Thanks to Vijaya Cherian and the team for a great event. 👏 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 • AI driven personalisation is already implemented and providing measurable results. • Monetisation of adverts, the success is linked to the right timing of when to serve ads where AI can help with these predictions. • We require end to end data to help create the correct AI models. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 • To drive sentiment AI will really help understanding the customers movements. • We need to take a cautious approach when collecting data and what we present to our Middle East client base. Different regions will require different personalisation. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 • Margins are tight in M&E we are focused on optimising cost, where as AI generated content will follow and inevitably provide the large upside. • We have other larger global players investing and the Middle East region tends to follow, rather than lead, so we can leverage innovation when its ready. • Local governance it still being implemented country to country and these policies will impact decision making. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽 • Overwhelming the customer experience with one super app will not be the key long term plan • It’s a challenge retaining customers, adding games, podcast can help, but sharing rights to content is an option, that’s not a technical challenge, it’s a business challenge.

Local content is king and Saudi content proves that. While "MBC's Shahid’s catalog contains almost half local content produced in Saudi Arabia or the MENA region. Only 4% of Netflix’s catalog in Saudi Arabia features Arabic-language titles." No wonder Shahid is no1 and no surprise to say that Netflix has a lot of catching up to do with Arab and especially Saudi and Egyptian content...assumimg that it has plans to do so. However while there is a huge weight for volume of content in attracting subs, quantity has to be highlighted with real premium quality flagship shows that appeal and reduce churn. This is the challenge. As per an article in Senal News and in an Accenture’s “Reinvent for Growth in the Media Industry” study, among the surveyed consumers, "58% say that user-generated content is as entertaining as traditional media, and 8% believe they trust content creators as much as established media outlets." This means that half of the viewers believe in TikTok and YouTube and Instagram...etc are as good for them as the big legacy and established Media companies. I assume that this kind of views is not applicable only to the US and Europe but is a worldwide phenomena in various degrees. If this is not a scary and warning sign for traditional as well as New Digital Media to adapt and innovate, then what is! Earlier this yea,r Serial churning has also been a focus of an Accenture report: "Nearly 60% of consumers are canceling and resubscribing to services based on the availability of desirable content." Also " 55.9% users expressed frustration at having to pay for multiple platforms to access their desired content." Executives and decison makers of Traditional Media, Pay TVs and even Streaming services, be aware that business models are still in limbo and copying what is happening elsewhere is not a durable solution as elswhere is changing more than what we are copying. To think out of the box, to be daring, to take calculated risks, to think beyond the end of the same year bottom line, might not bring magical and quick solution, but at least it helps to minimise risks and keep moving forward, rather than stagnating or even falling backward. STREAMING VIDEO: Whilst millions of dollars are being spent across our industry to solve the issue of latency in video streaming, particularly for live sports, this clip illustrates that some consumers see the latency of streaming as a hidden benefit! We can all point to examples of live events where a goal event is experienced at different times on a street or in an airport terminal depending on the delivery mechanism / network used, especially when we hear neighbours with DTT or satellite cheering a goal a good 10 seconds or more before someone streaming over the open internet. But does it really matter? How did reduced latency change the experience of Xfinity customers during the Olympics?
