Winter is coming! And so is the event season in Dubai. Meetups and events are popping up left and right lately. Last week, I went to the Human-Centered Design meetup and wanted to share some of my thoughts about the first talk—“Designing for impact” by Melissa Saoudy. You see, when I was learning design and starting my career, it was super easy for me to fall in love with my work: the look and feel of the products I made, tiny details and pixels, styles, flows, and perfecting every element of it. But on many occasions, what happened with that design later—how it was received by stakeholders, how it was implemented, and how it was delivered to the final customers—oh boy, that’s a different story. Designers design; we usually don’t execute. It took me a solid amount of time to learn and truly understand that when designing and building digital products, all invested parties need to work together, focus on the ‘why’, and measure the impact to make it successful. That’s why Melissa’s talk resonated with me deeply: it’s okay to love the craft, but you should also love the outcome. That means you’d most likely have to compromise your design at some point, and that’s okay—especially since you can never truly control the outcome. Design without measuring its impact will never give you that feeling of satisfaction from job well done. Only if you really focus on impact—on the measurable change caused by your design and the product—and if you work together with the whole team, then you’ll have a chance to create something that can change lives. Thanks aspexx. and Human Centred Design (HCD) UAE Meetup for putting this event together. It was great and I’ll be looking forward to the next one!

PHYSICAL UX + DIGITAL UX? Ensuring Unity in the Total Product Experience Not long ago, product design was primarily focused on the physical... industrial design, colors, materials, product graphics, with occasional displays and on-screen elements. Over the past 10-20 years, as screens became ubiquitous, the spotlight shifted to digital, demanding new directions in user experience. For those of us who've navigated this shift, user experience remains a holistic concept, always considering both the physical user experience (PUX) and digital user experience (DUX). However, as the focus has heavily moved towards digital, I recently worked with a client whose design and development teams were so compartmentalized between hardware and digital that they hardly interacted. How can the total experience succeed under such circumstances? We must be vigilant when separating hardware from software in design and development. It’s all too easy to lose the unity that creates a seamless brand experience, making it challenging to bring them back together into a cohesive whole. For the end users to have a great experience and for the success of brand, a holistic product experience is about creating a unified, consistent, and emotionally engaging journey that meets functional and emotional needs while reinforcing brand identity and values. The goal is to deliver an experience that not only make the people smile while interacting with the product and the product experience because it delivered on its promise, but also elevates the brand in their eyes, fostering loyalty and advocacy. At START Design Studios, we excel in both realms, always aiming to create a unified, cohesive, intuitive, and enjoyable user experience... where all components are balanced, and one is never prioritized over the other. Often, we find ourselves bridging the gap between physical and digital experience teams to prevent a fragmented user and brand experience. Whether fragmented or holistic, we still recognize the need for deliberate separation and specific terminology to enhance particular experiences, streamline the working process, and improve communication between teams. This deliberate distinction can lead to more effective collaboration and better end results. I’m curious... do you feel the need to separate physical and digital user experiences in your teams? How do you manage the challenge of ensuring a unified, holistic experience? #Design #UserExperience #PUX #DUX #ProductDesign #PhysicalDesign #DigitalDesign #STARTDesignStudios #IndustrialDesign

Few ideas on how to work with your users in your next project. I personally experienced a modification of Solution drag'n'drop where the user was pointing what to drag and drop to a specific place he imagined it should go. At first it may seem that it does't make sense, but once you get the full picture, you will be one step ahead of understanding your user's expectations.
