Excited to post this video I made for our Heirloom Creator platform. We’ve built so many great features that we wanted to find a way to showcase how well they all work together seamlessly. I challenged myself again to do it all in Figma since I’m in there 90% of the time, rather than exporting assets and bringing them into AfterEffects, messing with keyframes and timing, positioning etc. (Although I did use Aftereffects to drop the audio track on top, which was created by SOUNDRAW.io AI audio). If you're not familiar, Figma has a prototyping feature that let's you transition from screen to screen. I essentially used Smart Animate and adjusted speed and timing. I think it turned out pretty well 😎 What do you guys think? Would love to hear any tricks that any of you may have to do stuff like this.

Character.AI, a company that lets users create and chat with AI personalities, is facing questions after an AI version of a murdered teenager showed up on their platform without her family's permission. 👉 What Happened? - An AI character based on Jennifer Ann Crecente, who was killed in 2006, appeared on Character.AI - Her father, Drew Crecente, found out through a Google alert - The AI described itself as friendly and knowledgeable about video games and pop culture - Jennifer's uncle, Brian Crecente (founder of gaming news site Kotaku), called out Character.AI on social media 👉 Character.AI's Response The company quickly removed the character, saying: - A user created it, not Character.AI itself - It broke their rules against impersonation - They're looking into whether they need to do more Nicole Greene from Gartner points out that if brands use AI versions of real people without asking, it could make customers feel tricked. 👉 About Character.AI - Founded by ex-Google employee Noam Shazeer - Raised $150 million last year - Has 20 million monthly users - Hosts 100 million unique AI characters Drew Crecente, Jennifer's father, has opened a case with Character.AI. He's pushing for better safeguards, saying companies should be ready for these kinds of problems.

Is UX going to be the next big AI battleground? Anthropic seems so as they unveiled a feature called Artifacts that could redefine how we interact with AI entirely. Artifacts is essentially a workspace that sits alongside the Claude’s chat interface and allows users to manipulate and refine AI-generated content and outputs in real-time. It doesnt look like much on the first sight, but could represent an opening salvo in what may become the most crucial AI battleground of the coming years: the interface war. When Dropbox shifted to #VirtualFirst, my Design team helped lead the efforts to create the new model in a way that actually reimagined modern work. By applying a human centered design approach to build Virtual First—understand what users need, develop hypotheses, design and pilot solutions, observe results and iterate— what we saw as a result was true cultural transformation. This way of working is intentionally designed to make space for creativity, tinkering and deep work, while also reserving time for synchronous collaboration and IRL time when we need it. Through this process, we quickly realized there was a need for more conversation around the unique challenges of working in distributed ways. That’s how we came up with the idea for Remotely Curious—a podcast where we dive deep into the world of remote work and the struggles that come with it. One of my favorite episodes is on the topic of setting boundaries, an art that can take practice while working remotely. It’s something we’re laser focused on here at Dropbox—83% of employees feel successful in designing their own work schedules, but we know our employees want continued support around boundary setting between their work and personal lives as we continue in our Virtual First journey. Psychologist, professor, and best-selling author Andrea Bonior joined Remotely Curious to guide us through the specifics of setting boundaries in the workplace. One lesson that really stuck with me from the conversation was the idea that "clarity is kindness." It’s easy to fall into the trap of people-pleasing, where we start equating saying “yes” as being nice and saying “no” as being “difficult” or creating an uncomfortable environment. But clarity—being clear about your limits and expectations—is actually one of the kindest things you can do for yourself and your team. As leaders in a distributed environment, this is incredibly important to maintaining balance and remaining in control of our work. Creating healthy boundaries in my life enables me to be both a better leader for my team, and a better father and equal contributor at home. By being intentional in supporting myself as well as having a support system, or a “Team Alastair” around me, I can maintain better balance so that I can be the best version of myself, maintain peak-level performance and continue to scale both professionally and personally. Josh Clark's article raises some interesting points. We are in an era of rapid growth. Impossble tech becomes reality every day. How do we classify things in this Cambrian explosion of AI creatures? Despite our best efforts building a team, sometimes a new hire just doesn't work out. As design leaders, it's crucial to recognize these situations early and act decisively. Here's what I've learned: 💡 Trust your instincts: If you're seeing consistent feedback about misalignment or performance issues, don't ignore it. 🚫 Avoid the sunk-cost fallacy: It's tempting to keep pushing, but sometimes cutting your losses is the best move for everyone. 🔄 Reflect and learn: Use the experience to improve your hiring process. I just spent 3 days pairing with Gemini 1.5 Advanced (in place of another human, and because I was on a time crunch) on synthesis of some 20+ hour-long customer/user discovery interviews (I wanted to use the latest Claude model, but Gemini's massive context window was critical). I also looked at Dovetail, but I wanted something that was more flexible for my exact synthesis approach and didn't cost a pretty penny. Thought I'd share some takeaways, if they help anyone at all: * I fed all the transcripts in a single markdown file, with linked timestamps, into Gemini. * Attempting to set up the formatting for your themes can use up a lot of your usage quota, so it makes sense to try to get it to an acceptable format as quickly as possible. * As is fairly well-documented, a sequence of prompts is better than a massive upfront prompt that generates an entire report—it also encourages you to learn more about your data and not just expect the AI to give you the answers. This positions it as a collaborator, not something to delegate the project to. * Gemini has a huge context window and is incredible at pinpointing specific quotes if you ask for them. But just like a human, it won't catch every logical cluster of quotes or ideas when you're asking for themes. That's a fair price to pay for the efficiency of having it rapidly build themes (and having it add quotes with timestamps linked to video clips—which would otherwise be incredibly tedious.) The key is to frame the synthesis to yourself (and others) as a snapshot or tool for immersion, not an exhaustive documentation of every theme or directive on what customer problems to prioritize (and again... when is qualitative synthesis ever perfect?) * It's critical to spend time reviewing the quotes the system pulls. In almost all cases the quotes were really hard to comprehend directly from the transcript, but Gemini had captured the essence of each quote fairly well—usually because it was consuming the transcript before and after the quote and making sense of the conversation. I had the AI add an explanation above each quote so I could understand why it selected the quote, and also to make consumption of the report easier later on. * When I reviewed the themes and quotes, I spent most of my time either asking for additional quotes and/or changing the gist of the theme in a nuanced way to better reflect the connection I saw among the quotes... but 80% of the quotes were pretty spot on. * Gemini didn't hallucinate for me—it would honestly tell me when it couldn't find a quote to support a theme (for fun, I asked it if there were themes about cats & dogs and it answered appropriately.) However, I did ask it to summarize each interviewee and each interview to validate that it had consumed all my data. I also would periodically ask it if a specific interviewee—who may have been cited less—had any thoughts on the topic. Will share more takeaways as I think of them.

AI vs. Artists, yet again, and a Sarah Parvini sighting! The insightful, funny, empathetic expert on the massively lucrative video-game industry (and yes, full disclosure: former student) weighs in on the contentious & dangerous contract negotiations between video-game publisher and the artists that actually make games fun & engaging to play. An interesting tidbit: the industry seems far more inclined to protect voice actors, rather than the acrobatic motion-capture athletes/dancers/martial artists who provide the template(s) for those sword-swinging trollocs. Follow-up story: why is this?
