Having been at the forefront of consumer investing for almost 2 years as Vice-President, Investments at India's largest domestic consumer venture fund, Sixth Sense Ventures, I have engaged deeply with the evergreen Indian VC ecosystem – founders, investors, bankers. It’s been an absolute delight listening to new ideas each day and witnessing the magic founders are creating by the day. Every new interaction lent a new perspective yet underpinned a common belief – there’s no better place to be than India for the next 10 years – the next decade is India’s decade – as it stands at the intersection of opportunities, vibrant young professionals, new industries shaping up (talk green energy) and enhanced global recognition. This is evident with more and more institutional capital, domestic and overseas, now being directed to India. Circling back, this makes VC a very sought after career in the years to come. Understanding the limitations of entering this space, I have since long wanted to pass on my learnings. More so, having been a faculty in the past, I believe that knowledge when shared gets sharper and more robust. As the foreign venture capital world shifts and changes, to me it is evident that the next generation of Indian companies are going to be built with the support of Indian capital. The emergence of strong domestic brands in the VC space is a great start. And most of them (including Rukam) have raised capital from Indian institutions and family offices. The focus of Indian family offices too towards investing in startups is a step in the right direction. No country in the world has or can build a large startup ecosystem without domestic capital. As someone rooted in the Indian milieu it is of course significantly easier to understand the risks and the opportunities of building in India. There aren’t inflated business plans because it’s pretty evident to anyone who has lived most of their lives here that these just won’t fly no matter what. Domestic VCs have a great opportunity to build an ecosystem that showcases the best-in-class way of doing business. The emergence of domestic VC brands is a good sign of the robustness of our ecosystem. The next step is to make deeper pools of LP capital available as well as other enabling policies to domestic VCs so that this gets bigger and bigger. #Shasn, the brainchild of Zain Memon began as more than just a board game; it was created with a vision to give the world a glimpse into a politician’s mind. The idea was to design an engaging experience that captures the essence of the complex world of politics–right from India to the U.S. (and even Earth in 2040). The game puts you in the position of a politician who is met with decisions that will leave you questioning your own identity. - Concept and Design: The initial spark for SHASN stemmed from a desire to understand what makes politicians do what they do. Zain then translated this concept into an intricate game mechanic that combines different aspects of gameplay to make the experience truly immersive (I’ve had fights with people over this game). - From Thought to Tabletop: The development process involved thousands of hours of playtests in multiple countries, with over 30 different variations being tested in the first three months–all of which ended up in the creation of 2,200 unique cards and 12 kgs of gameplay called SHASN. It has been amazing to support and be a part of their journey. Pictured here is the prototype of the game with its many components, back when it was called “Manifesto”!
