The Access Bank UK Limited, a subsidiary of Access Bank Plc Bank Plc, has entered into a binding agreement to acquire a majority equity stake in AfrAsia Bank Limited Bank Limited (“Afrasia Bank”), the Republic of Mauritius’ fourth largest bank by total assets, with a Total Assets of more than US$5.7 billion and Net Profit After Tax of US$152.4 million(At the end of its fiscal year ended June 30, 202). Access UK seeks to utilize Mauritius as a strategic hub for trade finance and regional connectivity, thereby enhancing its capacity to facilitate cross-border transactions across Africa and beyond. . IBL Together National Bank of Canada , Intrasia Group , and BMH Ltd (an IBL subsidiary), currently constitute the major shareholding in Afrasia Bank, with 30, 20, 9, and 6 percent respectively. Access Holdings has this year broadened its footprint with strategic acquisitions, including Finance Trust Bank in Uganda (80% stake), National Bank of Kenya (100% acquisition), and African Banking Corporation of Tanzania, operating as Access Bank Tanzania. The transaction represents a transformational step forward for Access UK and the overall Access Holdings’ banking franchise

#FIS #TBond #CapitalMarkets The government bond market in Uganda must be brought under the regulation of the Capital Markets Authority- Uganda. This step must be prioritised as the legal risk of the Bank of Uganda is now evident. The FATF risk is obvious and has a national character. The settlement risk for bond investors is also evident due to the lack of investor protection, which BoU has no legal mandate to put in place. All these risks combined with the current positioning of the BoU are affecting the growth of the government bond market. The BoU needs to get out of the securities custody business, where investors’ assets (bonds) are held, and stop appointing securities dealers or “custodians" so that securities law can regulate these activities. The BoU may need to reconsider its role as a fiscal agent in the issuance of government bonds to mitigate the future market structure.

Ecobank announced on Wednesday that it has obtained approval from bondholders to raise its capital buffer, increasing it by 10%, to avoid defaulting on its 5-year senior bond. This move is part of the bank’s effort to manage inflationary pressures on the naira, which had prevented it from meeting obligations on its US$300 million, 5-year senior bond issued at a 7.125% coupon rate per year, potentially leading to a covenant breach. However, Ecobank confirmed on September 18, 2024, that bondholders have now approved a 10% increase in the bank’s capital buffer, the capital adequacy ratio, providing a solution to avoid defaulting on the bond, which is set to mature in 2026. https://lnkd.in/dEb8h6C5

Equity Bank Limited Group CEO James Mwangi has been appointed to the World Bank Group’s High-Level Advisory Council on Jobs. Launched during the 2024 The World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., the council aims to provide strategic guidance on creating job opportunities, particularly for youth and women in emerging and developing economies. This appointment highlights Mwangi’s influential role in shaping economic and social development across Africa and beyond. Co-chaired by Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of Singapore, and Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, the council includes a diverse group of leaders from policy, business, academia, and civil society. Its primary focus is to address the job crisis expected to affect 1.2 billion people in the Global South over the next decade, particularly in Africa, where 800 million individuals may face unemployment by 2034. The council’s recommendations will target scalable and actionable solutions to close this widening employment gap. Mwangi expressed his dedication to leveraging Africa’s young and growing population to drive economic growth and poverty reduction. He emphasized that Africa has the potential to achieve up to 15% GDP growth and a 17% reduction in poverty by 2030 through effective workforce utilization. He also highlighted Equity’s Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan, which aims to create 50 million jobs by the end of the decade, reinforcing his commitment to the continent’s economic transformation. The council will meet every two months over the next two years, engaging with senior World Bank leadership to ensure its recommendations are implemented effectively. Its distinguished members include global leaders such as Guy Ryder, United Nations Under Secretary General for Policy, and Patrick Achi, former Prime Minister of Cote d’Ivoire, alongside experts from institutions like the University of Chicago and Yale University.
