This project is supporting greater youth civic engagement, shaping youths in rural Zambia to become community change-makers that utilize local resources and 21st-century tools to apply creative thinking, problem solving in their community and become proactive builders of social enterprises and social campaigns for positive change.
Youth in Zambia face the challenges of poor education, unemployment and poverty. The Zambia Rural Youth Governance Project aims at promoting access to information and civic participation among youths in rural Zambia by educating youth in high schools on public speaking, writing, and advocacy to enable them to participate in the developmental agenda of their rural communities and to understand governance issues.
Youth comprise 65% of Zambia's population but have a representation of only 5% in the current national assembly. Poor education, unemployment, and poverty are the main challenges affecting youth in Zambia. More than half of primary school pupils do not proceed to secondary schools. Among youth who complete secondary education, only 28% acquire University qualifications. 60% of youths in rural areas are in poverty and lack access to relevant information that can support active citizenship. The internet penetration rate is 58.9% in Zambia but the access to the internet in rural areas remains low with only 0.8% of children from rural households accessing the internet. Youth in rural areas have limited access to information and tools that enable them to effectively participate in governance.
This project aims at educating youth in rural areas on governance and civic engagement targeting high school learners with the aim of building a generation of youth who will lead the development agenda in their communities. After the successful completion of the project, the youth will be able to work with their local councils and take up leadership positions.Other creatorsSee project
