To drive real impact in sustainable development, energy access interventions must be mainstreamed into long-term adaptation strategies. Subnational energy planning is crucial in this approach, enabling counties and regional administrations to identify where energy can best support local priorities, such as powering productive use opportunities in agriculture, healthcare, and restoration.    WRI Africa Deputy Regional Director Rebekah Shirley, Ph.D. says, with a solid energy plan, local governments can gather the data they need to map productive use of renewable energy and build investment prospectus tailored to the opportunities available in their communities. Community Energy IS a business Community Energy organisations are mainly Community Benefit Societies (CBS). ‘The purpose of a CBS is to serve the broader interests of the community, in contrast to co-operative societies that serve the interests of members. The 2014 Act (1) requires a CBS to “carry on a business, industry or trade” that is “being, or intended to be, conducted for the benefit of the community”.’ CBSs are "not for profit", as the excess income generated cannot be distributed to shareholder members except in the form of a capped interest rate. ‘Any profit (excess income) made by a CBS must be used for the benefit of the community. Unlike a co-operative society, profits cannot be distributed to members (shareholders) of a CBS. Interest on share capital is an operating expense and should be subject to a declared maximum rate.’ Whether the project is PV on a community centre, or replacing light bulbs with LEDs in a school, or any of the many other innovative ways CBSs bring renewable energy or energy savings to their communities, they are all designed to create excess income to fund community benefits beyond those created by the project itself. Every #CommunityEnergy #Share or #Bond offer is detailed in a Prospectus, which will include the Business Plan. Investing in Community Energy requires the same due diligence as any other investment. Excess income can and often is generated by CBSs, which they can either invest into further projects or use to provide grants within their community via a community benefit fund. For some CBSs the projects are the main community benefit, with the fund as an extra. For others, the projects are the means to generate revenue for the community benefit fund. “Being a co-operative puts people ahead of profit. The outcome is the same - a business comes in, helps people to access renewable energy and insulate their homes. But the throughput is different — profit is reinvested in people, employees and community - there is no growth for growth's sake. A thorough examination from All On into the Nigerian #minigrid market, presenting a $9.2bn market opportunity. The report highlights the staggering $14 billion annual expense due to inefficient energy generation, primarily from #dieselgenerators. A key survey in the report saw diesel generator usage plummet from 77% to 18% in areas where #solar minigrids had been deployed 📉 However, challenges still persist over the continual maintenance needed and inefficient problem diagnosis of the energy assets over time. There is a lack of #data available to unlock insights into the health and performance of the minigrid and all of it's components. Lacking this information creates a high risk market for many #investors. In collaboration with Action for Sustainable Development (A4SD), African Monitor conducted a survey inviting civil society organizations to independently evaluate the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The aggregated results contributed to both national and global assessments of SDG implementation through 2024, following the 2023 midpoint review. Participants rated each of the 17 Goals on a scale from -5 (significant regression) to +5 (significant progress), using 2015 as the baseline year. The survey specifically analyzed data on the implementation of SDG 5 (Gender Equality) in South Africa. The average score of 1.24, equivalent to 24.8% progress, reflects slow advancements in this area. Although South Africa has made some progress in recent years, particularly in addressing gender-based violence and implementing related policies, overall progress remains limited. #GenderEquality #SDGSurvey #SDG #SDG5

🚀 Launching the stakeholder engagement for a just transition report at the Indalo Inclusive South Africa NPC Symposium 2024! ICLEI Africa and the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) were proud to launch a report titled ‘Stakeholder perspectives on engaging with South Africa’s Just Transition’, funded by the European Union Climate Dialogues (EUCDs). Based on interviews, focus groups, and literature, the report provides insights on the stakeholder engagement processes for South Africa’s just transition and actionable recommendations for strengthening stakeholder participation in the future. The recommendations cover: 📜 A set of core guiding principles 🤝 Features of robust engagement 🔒 Steps to build trust and address mistrust 🔑 Key elements to build consensus and take contestation seriously Based on the report findings and ICLEI Africa’s ongoing just transition work in South Africa and beyond, deepened support is being provided to cities as they embark on just transitions towards equitable, prosperous, climate-resilient, and low-carbon economies and societies. 🌍

The PCC Commissioned Study on shares insights on inclusive and procedurally just processes and practices. Organisations and specialists urged to register on AfriForum’s Water Crisis Portal AfriForum is calling on organisations, engineers, specialists, and stakeholders involved in all aspects of water management to register on the civil rights organisation’s Water Crisis Portal (WCP). This initiative aims to update and expand AfriForum’s existing register of more than 600 specialists, engineers and companies already listed and thereby put together a comprehensive list of expertise and resources available to address the pressing water challenges currently facing South Africa. The organisation made a request to Deputy President Paul Mashatile and the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, after Mashatile recently indicated that the national government is prepared to involve AfriForum and other role players in civil society in the government’s water task force. However, AfriForum has not yet received any communication. AfriForum believes that addressing the water crisis requires swift and decisive action from all stakeholders involved. Failure to act urgently not only prolongs the deterioration of communities affected by water shortages and access to clean water but also exacerbates the environmental and socio-economic impact of the crisis. The organisation remains committed to working with government officials, water experts and community representatives to find solutions to the water crisis. The organisation urges all stakeholders to prioritise collaboration and action to mitigate the impact of the crisis on communities and the environment.
