🙏🤝 3 Actionable Ways to Build Trust in High-Context Cultures Building trust is a cornerstone of leadership in high-context cultures. Without it, collaboration and decision-making can grind to a halt. Trust is the medium of exchange for social capital in Africa. We have found that to draw on this social capital you first have to bank trust with your team. Remember that trust is earned based on your actions and behaviour as a leader over time. A long-term village elder can call upon the community for projects with less discussion and resistance than a brand new government official new to the district. The question every high-context leader has to ask themselves is “Does my team trust me?” or “Why should my team trust me?” Here are three actionable ways to build trust as a high-context leader: 1️⃣ Invest Time in Relationships – Trust is built over time, not through quick interactions. Schedule regular check-ins with your team and stakeholders to foster stronger relationships. 2️⃣ Be Transparent and Consistent – In high-context environments, actions speak louder than words. Be consistent in your decisions and actions to show reliability. 3️⃣ Understand Local Norms – Take the time to learn about the cultural and social dynamics that drive decision-making in your team.
