For the fourth year running BCP (BioCarbon Partners), takes home the award for Best Impact Monitoring Report, and Runner-Up for Best Project Developer, overall, in the 2024 Environmental Finance Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings. The Voluntary Carbon Market is a proven mechanism that allows the instant flow of money to Indigenous communities in the Global South, who need immediate relief from climate change-induced disasters and changing weather patterns. It is an effective tool to unlock urgent climate action that reduces emissions, protects ecologically significant landscapes, and helps reduce poverty. We welcome our stakeholders, investors, and partners each year on a journey through our impacts from the year just passed. Our 2023 Impact Report is no exception, with an ever-increasing number of regional projects under our 5-year strategic plan, more beneficiaries, greater biodiversity deliverables, and even more money invested in building climate resilience… welcome to BCP! We thank everyone who voted for us this year, and to the Zambian Government Ministry of Green Economy and Environment - Zambia, Department of National Parks & Wildlife, the 18 Chiefdoms we partner with throughout Zambia, our investors, and our conservation partners, and to our amazing team of #BCPeople. #carbonoffsets #carboncredits #climatechange #climateaction #climatemitigation #climateresiliance #cliamtejustice #community #biodiversity #conservation #zambia #africa #bestimpactreport

Under the Greater Limpopo REDD+ project, communities play a central role in the sustainable management of community forests, combining traditional practices with modern conservation strategies. This involvement generates positive impacts, such as strengthening food security, generating income through sustainable activities and valuing local knowledge, promoting socioeconomic and environmental development.

We're grateful to all our B Corps who joined our final virtual engagement of the year: "Understanding Carbon Markets: From Concept to Reality." Your active participation, insightful questions, and valuable feedback elevated the session. Special thanks to our guest speakers, Heather McEwan - Carbon Offset Markets from Verra and Gina Woolley from BCP (BioCarbon Partners). They provided a comprehensive overview of carbon market structures, differentiating between compliance and voluntary markets, and underscored the importance of integrity and measurable impact in carbon credits. BCP (BioCarbon Partners), a Zambia-based B Corp, shared their inspiring REDD+ projects, highlighting the positive impact on local communities, the rigorous project development process, and their ambitious goal to scale efforts for extensive forest protection and enhanced livelihoods. We're eager to continue exploring innovative solutions and driving positive change together. We invite you to join us on this journey. What an interactive and exciting process! Compiling an Annual Workplan(AWP) for the Mkhanya Community Resource Board (CRB) The workplan empowers the Mkhanya Community Resource Board (CRB) to fulfill its mandate, addressing identified Community needs by implementing projects chosen by the community during needs assesments which are facilitated by #BioCarbon , #ForestDepartment and #DNPW. This collaborative and structured approach ensures that the carbon fees paid by BioCarbon Partners are effectively utilized to meet the real needs of the community, driving sustainable development and positive change. Thanks to Mwizaso Chipeta, lucy ntambila , Emmanuel Zimba, BAcc, LZICA and others for their commitment to create a sustainable and responsible community. #BCP #DNPW #CRB #CBNRM #AWP #MKHANYA

Forest action is crucial for staying on a 1.5 C pathway, the UNEP-WCMC’s 2024 Emissions Gap report makes clear that keeping global temperature rise within 1.5°C is still technically possible -but only with immediate, ambitious action by all stakeholders. Healthy forests hold the key to achieving this goal, with the potential to deliver 20% of the emissions reductions required by 2030 through reducing deforestation, accelerating reforestation, and advancing sustainable management (UNEP, 2024). Together, these measures could mitigate at least 4 gigatons of CO₂ annually by 2030—an essential part of the solution we need. Forests stabilize our climate and sustain our vital ecosystems. They absorb an estimated 16 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually, equaling about half of the annual CO2 released from burning fossil fuels (The World Bank 2023). This natural carbon storage helps regulate the climate, while forests also sustain 80% of terrestrial biodiversity and provide services essential to human well-being, including water filtration, air purification, and soil health. These ecosystem services are foundational to food and water security, the sustainable livelihoods of nearly 1 billion people – including millions of Indigenous People, public health, and resilience to climate impacts. Climate impacts and forest loss create a destructive feedback loop: Forest loss and climate change are mutually reinforcing. Rising emissions drive global warming, which in turn fuels conditions like drought and heat that exacerbate deforestation and crop losses. Climate-driven wildfires, now more frequent and severe, exemplify this vicious cycle by destroying carbon-storing ecosystems and releasing large quantities of CO₂ and methane. Recent attribution studies confirm that climate change has greatly increased wildfire risk, adding to greenhouse gas emissions and making it harder to achieve a 1.5°C pathway (Peng et al., 2022; Saunois et al., 2024). Without intervention, this self-perpetuating cycle could make stabilizing temperatures virtually impossible. Climate mitigation and forest action matter now more than ever: Every ton of CO₂ we prevent from entering the atmosphere reduces the pressure on forests and helps break the feedback loop. Effective mitigation efforts that reduce emissions can limit the extent of climate-driven impacts, stabilize temperatures, and relieve the stress placed on forest ecosystems. By preserving forests and reducing emissions, we have a chance to restore the balance between these vital ecosystems and the climate. Halting deforestation, improving sustainable forest management, and ensuring that forests are resilient to climate impacts are critical steps to maintain these carbon sinks and preserve their role in stabilizing the climate and regulating rainfall. Children in Rufunsa Meet Chaona, the Forest Champion, with BCP (BioCarbon Partners). “Chaona’s whole family depends on the forest. Her father is a charcoal burner, and her mother collects wood for cooking. But Chaona loves the birds and animals that live there and worries about where they will live when trees are cut down. She learns that trees are clever; as well as providing shade and homes for her favourite animals, they clean the air that she breathes and can even make rain”. This uplifting story by Alayne Oriol Cotterill and Amy Dickman from Lion Landscapes explores the complexities of deforestation and the devastation it can bring to the families and wildlife living there, as well as the wider 🌍. Last week, we donated 50 books to schools in Rufunsa District, home to our Lower Zambezi REDD+ Project area, in our efforts to strengthen #conservationeducation in a way students can relate to. #conservation #zambia #climatechange #climateaction #deforestation #climatemitigation #education #biodiversity #forestprotection
