I recently had a conversation with a well seasoned and experienced recruitment specialist about the availability of fully qualified CIMA candidates in the South African job market and they raised a very interesting point: they are by far seeing that a large portion of the candidate profiles with an average of 5 to 8 years of working experience are not yet fully CIMA qualified - they are all at various levels of the qualification but not yet fully qualified #CGMA. One of the points that was made was that SAICA has a very structured path - a 4 year degree (CTA), structured articles, ITC in year 1 or articles with major support from the articles provider, APC exam in year 2 of articles (with major support from thr articles provider), final sign off in year 3 and the CA(SA) designation is yours - this is very oversimplified, but it applies to many students following the #CA stream. The point is, if there any structured CIMA pathway routes that follow the above, there may be many more students wanting to pursue the designation or it may offer a lot more structure and support for students who are already pursuing the designation. The awareness around CIMA practical training providers (let's call them CIMA articles) is very minimal. I encourage Universities and educators to create more awareness around the "fastest route" to CGMA designation: 1. Provide information on CIMA accredited degrees that give entrance into the CIMA strategic level exams post qualification 2. Partner with CIMA articles providers for intake of students during the final years of studies (similar to Audit articles) 3. Partner with the government on itiatives to encourage corporates to adopt CIMA articles as part of their training program (subsidies, grants, BBBEE allocations for youth career development etc) And I encourage CIMA to partner with more companies to offer: 1. Dedicated and structured CIMA articles for students to obtain their minimum PER to qualify 2. Additional paid time off to support preparing for exams 3. Mentorship and guidance to provide mental health support during exam preparation and writing 4. Partner with board prep courses to assist students with exam preparing for 1st time passes The above are all widely available in South Africa for the CA stream, we need more awareness around what is available for the CGMA stream.

‘I felt intimidated, and found it difficult to challenge the Sales Director, and thought that, that level of stakeholder was above my pay grade , I just felt a bit out of my depth, if that makes sense’ This is from an interview I did with a really smart, Finance Business Partner sometime ago who had struggled with a particular relationship with a Senior Director. It was an interesting chat, and got me thinking about the challenge of being an FBP And the occasional power imbalance in Stakeholder relationships within the role. My take on this is: - no matter what level the stakeholder is, a good FBP can provide major value, so should have a seat at the table - good leaders welcome challenge and debate so that they can make smart decisions, so from a challenge perspective the door is already half open. - be patient and consistently demonstrate your value, influence doesn’t happen overnight - Remember Robert Green “48 Laws of Power” - ‘Don’t outshine the Master’ Challenge in the right way, at the right time It can take time to build solid relationships with some stakeholders, but once built, the role can be very rewarding, and value adding. A number of employment tax related queries have been raised in parliament this week: 1. To ask His Majesty's Government whether they plan to make the online self-assessment tax return form SA100 available to download, so that taxpayers wishing to submit paper returns do not have to telephone His Majesty's Revenue and Customs to obtain it. 2. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, if she will make an estimate of the potential impact of abolishing the mileage allowance scheme reduced rate for over 10,000 miles of travel in the tax year on the travel costs of people working in the voluntary sector. 3. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what recent assessment has she made of the potential impact of uprating mileage allowance scheme rates on the travel costs of people working in the voluntary sector. 4. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, if she will make an estimate of the amount of revenue that removal of the personal allowance from additional rate taxpayers would raise. 5. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, to publish what the total value of (a) income tax paid, (b) National Insurance Contributions paid, (c) tax credits claimed and (d) child benefit claimed for non-UK nationals is, broken down by nationality, for each of the last five years. 6. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether she has had recent discussions with HMRC on (a) industrial relations at the Benton Park View office in Newcastle and (b) the appropriate use of disciplinary practices in that office. 7. To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, if her Department will make an assessment of the potential merits of developing a system to tackle trends in the level of tax evasion from small businesses. THE WHT REGULATIONS 2024 HAS BEEN GAZETTED The Deduction of Tax at Source (Withholding) Regulations, 2024, has been published in the official gazette. The Regulations grant rates reduction and full exemption from Withholding Tax to many businesses, including SMEs with annual turnover not exceeding N25 million. Read further details here: https://lnkd.in/dUUswgsA The commencement date of the new Regulations is 30th September 2024, while implementation begins on 1st January 2025 to allow for a minimum of 90 days notice required for tax changes in line with the 2017 National Tax Policy. However, there is a provision permitting the FIRS, with the approval of the Finance Minister, to issue guidelines for the implementation of the Regulations and where appropriate, permit early application of the Regulations from 1st July, 2024. The essence of this provision is to enable persons who wish to adopt the Regulations early to do so given that it is generally providing reliefs to businesses rather than imposing a burden. Leadership by Example: The Power of Actions Over Words As a Deputy Accounting Manager, I’ve had the privilege of working under Anthony Ogunkelu, FCCA, our Accounting Manager and team leader, who never shies away from getting his hands dirty. I remember one of our peak periods during a quarterly closure—we were swamped with a tight deadline, and everyone was feeling the pressure. Instead of urging us to work harder, Anthony Ogunkelu, FCCA rolled up his sleeves and joined us in the trenches. He stayed late, worked alongside us, and showed us that he wasn’t just our leader—he was part of the team. That experience taught me a valuable lesson: real leadership isn’t about telling people what to do but showing them how it’s done. When leaders lead by example, they inspire their teams to go the extra mile, fostering a culture of dedication and trust. As leaders, our actions speak louder than words.
