Our first 'Leading from the Front' report for South Africa has just been released by our Head of Digital, Tatenda Mutsekwa! This report analysed JSE 100 executive members’ social media presence. A key finding was that the executive leadership teams of top companies are not utilising their LinkedIn profiles well to drive their organisation’s key messages.   Organisations with five or more active executive team members drives higher levels of engagement compared to organisations who have less active executive members. Highlights from keynote speaker Dr Miriam Altman - a strategist, economist, business person and social activist - on Day 1 of the #Citywire South Africa Retreat... - Creating a strong fiscal space and institutions – both of which have deteriorated in SA over the past decade – is very important for #resilience. - SA has grown at 1.5% per capita growth on average since the 1960s, with a few outlier years. If SA didn’t tank during the state of emergency in 1980s under apartheid, ask why there's a fear that it would tank now. SA has never tanked before. - A possible election outcome is the ANC opting to be a minority #government with no #coalition. It is constitutionally allowed and may be better than having a coalition with a pretence of commonality. Parties in support of the #Constitution would amount to 66%, thus securing the Constitution. Altman will be watching for the following critical decisions to determine SA’s trajectory: - That there’s demonstratable and clear respect for our Constitution, judiciary and the #propertyrights framework. - Commitment to a fiscal framework - Certainty around leadership appointments; particularly in Sarb, National Treasury, metros, SOE boards and executive management, where having quality leadership is critical.

THE FOUR YEARS TO REMEMBER Trump’s remarkable political comeback to the Oval Office has the world mulling over the implications for global growth, particularly for emerging markets like South Africa. Experts have raised key concerns: 1. US-China decoupling risks... Trump’s proposed 60% tariff on Chinese trade and a universal 10% tariff on all other imports could significantly disrupt global trade. For China’s trading partners, such as South Africa, the ripple effects could pose a serious challenge to growth prospects. See earnings forecast below. 2. Impact of Trump reflationary agenda on emerging market monetary policy... Trump’s reflationary policies might slow the pace of interest rate cuts in emerging markets. With South Africa’s Monetary Policy Committee expected to announce a 25 basis points rate cut this week, could this mark the end of the easing cycle? Emerging markets like South Africa must now rise to the challenge by demonstrating bold, strategic, and long-term economic leadership to ensure sustained growth. The standout presentation for me was by Pepe Marais CEO of @JoePublic, talking about the fundamental human truth that drives business forward, a balance of heart and mind in finding purpose and leading meaningfully. He spoke about doing the inner work as a leader, because hurt people hurt people and healed people heal people. Very inspiring! #SanlamLeadershipConference2024
