📗 | Publication Alert | Electricity sector reform and planning South Africa's electricity sector is undergoing radical reform that has been in the works since as early as 1998. There are, at least, 3 pieces of legislation and policy that will shape the trajectory of our #EnergyFuture and ambitions to attain a #netzero economy by 2050. The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has yet to finalise the Draft Integrated Resource Plan (SA's energy plan). H.E. Cyril Ramaphosa also has on desk the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill, and the Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Bill which creates statutory and regulatory mechanisms for oil and gas resource exploitation in South Africa. The Presidential Climate Commission published the first-ever State of Climate Action in South Africa report. Its criticism of incoherent policies (especially when it comes to energy planning) that are hindering climate action sends a strong message to the government to stop working in silos. GreenCape has published annual reports on South Africa's green economy market for 2024 in collaboration with the UK’s PACT program. SA has seen tremendous growth in renewable energy adoption with a forecasted 32GW installed capacity by 2030. The adoption of renewable technologies has been accelerated by the impacts of load shedding and the drive to reduce carbon emissions to meet net-zero ambitions. The first step to improving energy consumption is Energy Efficiency. EPCs help identify energy efficiency and saving opportunities which assist with correctly sizing renewable energy supply. Other energy efficiency trends identified in the report are the adoption of smart meters and smart HVAC systems.
