An Ode to The Don Madfunz Ah, South Africa—a land where progress and inequality waltz like an awkward couple. We marketers paint the sky with dreams while conveniently ignoring the dirt on the ground. It’s our job to sell fantasies, right? We made diamonds a girl’s best friend and forgot to mention the conflict and misery that come with them. Why let facts ruin a good campaign? But today’s consumers are wising up. They’re rebelling against the consumerism we shove down their throats like it’s the secret sauce to happiness. Imagine that—a revolution where people want to live rather than shop. Who would've thought? The new generation values quality of life over meaningless clutter. Take a page from Don Madfunz, my unsung hero. Not quite Gen Z, but living his best life on TikTok, he shows that joy doesn’t have an expiration date. Sure, some mock him, but others celebrate him. He’s proof that authenticity makes waves while we’re debating if Helvetica or Arial is the right font. Speaking of authenticity, let’s talk about Drake's video directed by Theo Skudra. It’s a plea for healing, starring Don Madfunz. It's about striving for a better future and finding joy amidst chaos. And we marketers missed the boat. Instead of connecting with real stories, we were busy worrying if our font choice would offend someone. This video wasn’t just a marketing opportunity—it was a wake-up call. It strips away the glitter we love and highlights the raw reality of life. It challenges us to ask whether our work truly reflects our audience or just strokes our egos. As marketers, we have the power to shape desires, influence behavior, and define success. But with great power comes great responsibility. We must reconcile what we preach with what truly benefits society. Our work should reflect the real world, not some fantasy. Now is the time for healing and self-reflection. Does your work actually reflect the world, or are you hiding behind buzzwords and inflated metrics? Are you genuinely adding value, or just creating another pointless campaign? We need to heal and unlearn, embracing the uncomfortable truths of our consumers' reality. Only then can we create meaningful work. Let’s stop pretending we have all the answers and start listening. Those who have been following my entrepreneurship journey know how in 2020 I resigned from a very lucrative job at Heineken SA, to pursue my entrepreneurial journey. As underrated as the job may have been then, but being a sales rep is lucrative today based on the economy, and the struggles of today. Sales reps are probably some of the people who have life a bit simplified economy wise. Driving a company car, and being a beneficiary of all those perks at work is something to never take for granted. I have been on this journey without a payslip for 5 years now and let me tell you, it is the most rewarding thing, as difficult as it. Here there is no pool car, there is no dropping car off for service, there is no calling insurance for every small thing. There is no guaranteed paycheque 😩😩 and there is certainly no sleep. As scared as I was, I knew my capabilities, I knew what I could achieve. I knew that everything I wanted to achieve at corporate, that never happened, I could implement in my own company and make it a success. I blocked the noise, I kept the faith, stayed foolish and hungry. To everyone who is sitting in an office, in their company car, or on leave out of frustration, never be scared of starting off from scratch. Just start! Start now. Start where you are. Start with fear. Start with doubt. Start with hands shaking. Start with voice trembling but start. Start and don’t stop. Start where you are, with what you have. Just start. Do what’s uncomfortable, and scary, and hard, but pays off in the long run. Be willing to fail. Let yourself fail. Fail in the way and the place where you would want to fail. Fail, pick yourself up and fail again. Because without this struggle, what is your success anyway? As best we know we have one life. In it, you have to trust your own voice, your own ideas, your honesty, your vulnerability, and through this you will find your way. You do not have to be fearless, just don’t let fear stop you. Live like this as best you can and I guarantee you will look back on a life well lived. Today, 4 years later since I left corporate, I am winning, the vision is clear. It has not been easy, but it is achievable and you too can win. Trust in yourself. Trust in your ideas and make them your livelihood!

Coming on to the same page Very recently, I have completed my certification for coaching debriefing of the Harrison Assessments. This is a world renowned Employee engagement assesment. You can google this for more details As part of my certification, I was given a case of the assesment done for a manager and I was to debrief a Harrison assigned coach, this is virtually over zoom to a person based out of Hongkong. This session went on for over 2 hours. During the course of this session I got valuable insights on how a developmental feedback needs to be given Most of the times when we speak of areas of development, it’s not an easy conversation since the way it lands for the individual is very negative for the individual, he/she gets into a defensive mode and hence the acceptance becomes difficult and therefore the progress forward becomes difficult How can you create a aha moment through a dialogue that brings in a new insight to the individual whereby the conversation lands as “ oh, this is something that I never thought of, let me examine this” and this will help in progress forward by means of specific action planning The simple way to communicate this is by sharing the consequences of what will happen if the same way of being / same way of doing continues by saying some people when do it this way, they miss out/ lose out on..,,,,… when something is not directed to the individual ( that you have done a mistake) there is more openness to listen to the consequences and then the enrolment happens In a conversation when we are looking to helping an individual to embrace a change, it is important to spend sufficient time enroling the individual. One can then see big movements forward I am in this journey of spending time and getting into this enrolment process rather than a straight jacked thrust down/ push down method which creates unintentional consequences and hampers efficiency and productivity. Also creates a huge effect on ones well-being through anxiety and stress

It was never “if”… We believe the future is local, micro and artisanal. Our needle felting loom is moving to KZN where we are partnering with Knoop Academy NPC on a project to recycle textile waste. This project aims to demonstrate why it is essential to find new ways of recovering surplus textiles and turn these into new applications while benefiting the local population where this surplus textile occurs. We should not transport waste all over South Africa and we should not downcycle surplus textiles because it is easier.
