"A postcolonial Indigenous paradigm as defined by scholars from a variety of geographical regions is offered as a way of doing research that expressly draws out and tries to revitalise the relational knowing-and-being processes of Indigenous communities in Africa, the Indigenous peoples of Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and the USA (First Nations). These scholars (Indigenous, as well as non-Indigenous ones who can be regarded as allies) have tried to credentialise this research paradigm by expanding upon the underlying suggestion that processes of knowing are inextricably tied to ways of living (being in relation to others, human and more-than-human). This implies a specific conception of responsibility to try to nurture (in all fields of our influence, including in research practices) relationships that can be considered reciprocal rather than exploitative (of other humans or of other species and of the land and its communities). It offers a non-anthropocentric outlook (ethic) in its insistence that research needs to be attuned not only to human wellbeing (and especially to those most marginalized across the globe) but at the same time to the wellbeing of more-than-human others for their own sake and not only for the benefit of humans."Norma Romm. Learning, adaptation and flexibility are KEY drivers for effective and responsive programming. Punitive and rigid funding and reporting frameworks are shown by the literature to inhibit organisational learning. Sonja Giese highlights critical enablers for funding data-driven programmes in ECD that came out of the DataDrive2030 funders symposium. I love this point: "Adequate investment is needed in the full data value chain, and for the full duration of the learning journey. Enabling funding practices include multi-year grants, budgets appropriately matched to the data needs of the organisation, support for core capacity and sufficient flexibility within budgets to accommodate data informed course correction." Data is only powerful when organisations have the agency and support from funders to act on it.

The word #diaspora may not appear in this article but Dua Lipa's words capture why we need more diaspora leaders in position of influence around the world. In explaining her willingness to speak up on issues of social justice and her process for doing so, what do you think she was hinting at below? She said that speaking up is a: “natural inclination for me, given my background and heritage, and that my very existence is somewhat political — it’s not something that is out of the ordinary for me to be feeling close to.” Yup, her diaspora story. Diasporas bring nuanced understanding and are complex problem solvers based on their ability to see the world through different perspectives because they've had to do that. #Diasporaengagement can be such a powerful force for good in the world. For too long, we've been reductionist in our thinking on that with a predominant focus on finance to be frank. We now need the nuance of approach to diaspora that diasporas are famous for!! This also means looking for diaspora where it may not seem obvious, like in this article. Just this little case study signals why diaspora #diplomacy can change the game on some of the most pressing issues of our time. The world needs to be in solution mode, not discussion mode, to meet these issues head on. The world could make a smart decision for itself by prioritising diaspora engagement on this journey.....I have a funny feeling it would have a great ally in Dua Lipa. Onwards.

We are committed to not just raising awareness, but also implementing programs and systems that empower survivors, promote open dialogue, and ensure dignity for all. Together, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for everyone. Violating the rights of women, children, and anyone affected by gender-based violence is a grave injustice. We must speak out and take action to protect human rights and support those impacted. It's great to be back in South Africa, where the work of the Open Society Foundations began, in 1979, with scholarships for Black students attending the University of Cape Town. Today, we remain committed to a vision of society where all people live as equals, with guaranteed rights and freedoms - and not privileges because of their race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and other identities. Nearly three decades after South Africa adopted a constitution to "lay the foundations for a democratic and open society," there are key challenges that have to be met. The legacy of apartheid and the failures of our current economic system have created the most unequal country in the world. To build a fairer society, we are working in South Africa on new economic models that will allow the economy to grow in sustainable, more equitable ways while tackling the ravages of climate change. Earlier this year, Open Society announced an investment of $400 million that will advance economic justice through green industrial policy. South Africa, one of our countries of focus, needs a just energy transition. At the moment, it has an overdependence on coal and land use while failing to meet the country's energy needs. To support South Africa's industrial and consumption demands, the transition needs to secure diversified, green, sustainable energy sources. It was a pleasure to speak with Iman Rappetti and Newzroom Africa on Open Society Foundations' new programs, our enduring commitment to South Africa and the continent, the challenges and opportunities in the country, and the role South Africa can play in shaping a new, just and equitable order at home, regionally and globally.

A secret ingredient in a recipe for success for #diasporaengagement? Belonging can be nurtured! What is the difference between migration and #diaspora? Migration, for me, is the language of borders and identity but Diaspora is the language of belonging and identification. The first is rooted on concepts of rigidity that are often entrenched and prone to being politicized and weaponized. The second is rooted on concepts of fluidity and agility, much more powerful for the contested world we live in. It is this fluidity that allows you to nurture them more creatively. I was invited by Prof Bheki Moyo who leads the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment - CAPSI to share some of my thoughts on why (South) African #philanthropy needs to mainstream #climatechange into their impact strategies, and how they can do so while deepening (rather than changing) their priorities. Our biggest climate risks are not just about the weather "out there," but about material challenges like food security, health and education outcomes, economic security and sustainability, mobility and migration, good governance and accountability...you get my point...

Sharing this long but preceptive read for your info, possibly for the weekend ahead. Recently done by Isabelle King, the Deputy Managing Editor of Harvard International Review: “Refining the Lobito Corridor: The Future of Cobalt in Sub-Saharan Africa” - https://lnkd.in/dJBtezAQ It is one of the few incisive analyses seen so far, especially in much talked about 800 miles/1200 kilometres mine-to-port railway, dubbed Lobito Corridor, crisscrossing Angola, Zambia, and DRC, and its links to skyrocketing demand for critical energy transition minerals. It references the recent IEA report on the “Role of Critical Minerals in Clean Energy Transitions”, showing that “by 2040, clean-energy technologies will need 40 times more lithium, 25 times more graphite, and 20 times more nickel and cobalt than in 2020”. It may shed additional light on some of the recently announced deals at FOCAC and the sidelines of UNGA-79, including President Joe Biden's visit to Angola next month (13-15 October). Paints Southern Africa as the new battleground for global powers and foreign mining giants, with meagre benefits to the countries involved. e.g. juxtaposes DRC’s harbouring of 80% of the world’s cobalt, vis-a-vis its holding of just 3% of the battery and EV value chain. It also presents a few ‘hope spots’, including in the following countries: Zambia ( US$100 million energy facility); Zimbabwe (US$1.4 billion lithium-processing plant); DRC ( US$800 million hydrometallurgical plant— aiming to produce copper and cobalt by the end of 2025; and US$350 million copper-cobalt smelter). But alludes to the ongoing instability in eastern DRC as a significant risk factor - and cites the EU Parliament report of June 2024 that says the protracted conflicts in eastern DRC have occasioned "approximately six million deaths since 1996 and a current total of 7.1 million internally displaced persons".
