This decline, many argue, stems from the abandonment of the foundational culture established by Raymond Ackerman. Unlike the struggling corporate-owned stores, Pick n Pay's franchise locations continue to thrive, demonstrating the enduring value of Ackerman's principles. These franchise stores excel in customer service, maintain well-stocked shelves, and effectively manage bulk purchasing to offer consumers competitive deals. The current executive board, critics suggest, should take a cue from the franchisees' successful practices. The leadership's major strategic missteps, including the ill-fated Quali store concept, have been costly. This concept, seen as both short-sighted and misguided, has contributed to the company's current plight. As Pick n Pay's financial woes deepen, the future looks increasingly uncertain. Employees, unfortunately, may bear the brunt of these corporate misjudgments, facing potential job losses. The road ahead appears bleak, highlighting the urgent need for a strategic reassessment and a return to the core values that once propelled Pick n Pay to success.

This was such a fun conversation. It was so good that we needed to complete it on a second day sampling some of the local beers that go into our feedstock! David, you are on such an amazing trip and I am sure many people (including me) are jealous of this opportunity. That said, what you are doing by sharing knowledge and asking the hard questions is key for our industry. You have a natural ability to cut to the key issues and not get carried away in the hype. Best of luck for the rest of the trip and enjoy the "downtime" too. It was a pleasure getting to know you. One final thought for the #BSF industry, I was skeptical about letting David into the plant at first, I think we all have an element of secrecy to what we do to protect our trade secrets (and we do too). That said, we all need to think about how we can walk closer together. Experience and information sharing is critical if we want insects to be taken seriously. As Maltento, we have formed some great relationships in the industry. It is important to build trust and move beyond the mindset that someone will steal your concept and rather focus on how we can help each other succeed. It is a liberating feeling when you can share your challenges with another industry leader and see how they might have fixed it. Food inflation in South Africa rose 4.1% year-on-year in August, ending an 8-month decline, while overall inflation dropped to 4.4%. Key increases in bread, cereals and vegetables were noted, with potato prices up 21% month-on-month. 📍 Cape Town 🪰 GreenCape 👨‍🌾 Sam Smout Greencape are a not for profit organisation that is helping to facilitate the expansion of the green economy in #SouthAfrica, by linking #government, #investment and #business. Since 2010, they have helped to facilitate and support a whopping 2.2bn USD! Have a look at their website here: https://greencape.co.za/ Sam sits on the waste sector desk and actually helped me to facilitate a lot of my visits around Cape Town. Sam explained that the Western Cape has pledged zero organic #waste to #landfill by 2027 and that the region is focusing their efforts on #blacksoldierfly innovation to solve this challenge. Greencape has received specific funding for facilitating this. #Composting and #anaerobicdigestion (AD) are commonly known methods for recycling organic waste. However, Sam and the team have found out that the value gained from #BSF in South Africa is far higher than both composting and AD, as I'll explain below. 🗑 Composting struggles to deal with municipal food wastes as it produces inconsistent #fertiliser outputs that don't always fit into their specification certifications. Also, the process of composting uses a lot of land and releases #methane. 🗑 AD is an immature industry in South Africa that isn't working yet as the price for electricity output isn't high enough. Additionally, AD plants gather a lot of sediment due to strong winds in the region, meaning the facility must deep clean more frequently than normal, reducing the overall efficiency of the operation. 🗑 BSF is far more economical. You just need to add together the revenue streams, which I'll lay out rather crudely below. Myth busting the profit model: ❌ Protein revenue ➡️ profit ❌ Waste revenue ➡️ profit ✅ Protein ➕ frass ➕ waste ➡️ profit The importance of driving down the cost of production is well known and being focused on intensely worldwide. However, there is not one BSF business that I've been to that yet capitalises effectively on ALL the revenue streams. Profitability is clearly what everyone is working hard towards, but it is a carefully balanced equation that I believe this industry needs to exercise a bit more common sense. Sam mentioned two companies doing well in this space: Maltento (Pty) Ltd in Cape Town with the #protein Bardee in Australia with the #frass Going back to Greencape and the specific case study of the Western Cape, I believe there is a huge opportunity for BSF here. You can get paid to receive organic waste (for now), the labour is low cost and available and there is a lot of expertise in the area. I had a fantastic conversation with Sam. With a little proactive collaboration from the government and food producers, South Africa can use the one thing it has in spades — culture — to generate economic opportunities.

This afternoon, we invited partners and funders to join the SA Early Years Climate Action Alliance that The Do More Foundation and Capita is co-leading. I explained that 7 years ago, RCL FOODS, one of South Africa’s leading food companies, recognised a powerful truth: that by embracing collective impact, partnering, and collaboration, we could achieve far more for our communities than by working alone. This realisation gave birth to The Do More Foundation. When we began this journey, our impact was concentrated in just three communities. Today, we now support nine communities intensively and reach out to an additional 20 communities across South Africa. This growth is not just a testament to our efforts but also to the strength of our partnerships and the belief that together, we can do more by placing young children at the centre of our efforts. Our connection with Joe Waters and our insights into Capita's work on the US Early Years Climate Action Plan highlighted for us the urgent need to address the climate challenges faced by the most vulnerable—our children and caregivers in some of South Africa’s most impoverished communities. We understood that no single organisation could tackle these complex issues alone. The devastating impact of climate change on our communities made it clear: climate is not just an environmental issue; it is the very context in which our children live, learn, and grow. This understanding has driven our commitment to co-lead the Alliance, where we will not only advocate for collaborative solutions but actively implement climate resilience strategies on the ground. By engaging with communities, learning from them, and sharing these insights, we aim to build resilience that extends beyond our borders. The knowledge we gain and the strategies we develop will benefit not only South Africa but also serve as a blueprint for other developing countries and global south. We believe in the power of partnership. We believe in the potential of every child, in the strength of every community, and in the possibility of creating a better, more resilient world. But we cannot do it alone.
