MTN South Africa teams up with Investec and Electrum to introduce PayShap, a real-time, low-value interbank digital payments service, on its Mobile Money (MoMo) platform. This strategic collaboration aims to revolutionize mobile payments, providing users with instant and cost-effective transaction capabilities. By leveraging PayShap, MTN becomes the first non-banking player to offer this service, addressing a critical gap in serving the unbanked population. PayShap, launched by the South African Reserve Bank, facilitates instant digital payments between banks within 60 seconds, offering MTN users a faster and more accessible payment solution. Investec serves as the banking partner, while Electrum provides technical expertise for the integration of PayShap with the MoMo platform. Inspired by successful global models like Reliance Jio and UPI AutoPay in India, this collaboration aims to reshape South Africa's digital payments landscape. Cashless payments have the potential to transform South Africa’s township economy by reducing transaction costs, improving financial inclusion, and lowering safety and security risks for consumers and merchants alike. These benefits could, over time, help to formalise township economies and facilitate faster growth.   That’s according to Martin Wright, CEO of Kazang, the prepaid value-added services (VAS) and card acquiring business within JSE-listed fintech Lesaka Technologies Inc..
