A South African non-profit working to expand and deepen democratic participation
About us
The Third Republic is a non-profit company working to expand and deepen democratic participation in South Africa. We have three areas of focus: Supporting independent municipal candidates: Almost every municipal councillor belongs to a political party, and even the few independent councillors are likely to be former party members. We provide the research, training, and other support services of an established party - but for true independent candidates. Community monitoring and support: We monitor the spatial development, social resources, and service delivery of selected communities and wards in Gauteng. Whether our candidates win office or not, we will be working with communities and holding local government accountable. Research and advocacy: Our ongoing research projects focus on community development, local government, and constitutional reform. We have a strong research background that includes public finance, spatial development, constitutional law and data visualisation. We provide insight into the legal and development challenges facing the country which informs our advocacy work.
