Today as we close off the year we bid farewell to Amelia Briggs-Morris, a Canadian housing lawyer, has spent the past six months working with SERI’s Women’s Spaces project as part of Rooftops Canada - Abri International's Young Professional program. During her time with us, Amelia developed practical fact sheets for Community Advice Offices on important topics including women’s property rights in cohabitation, marriage, divorce, and death. These resources will help women better understand their housing rights and navigate complex legal processes. Amelia also presented a seminar comparing informal settlement law in South Africa and Canada, highlighting unique challenges and shared lessons between the two contexts, fostering meaningful cross-border dialogue on the right to adequate housing. We thank Amelia for her contributions to SERI and her commitment to advancing housing justice and gender equality.

A non-profit human rights organisation working to develop and implement strategies to realise socio-economic rights.
About us
The Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI) is a non-profit human rights organisation. We work with communities, social movements, individuals and other non-profit organisations in South Africa and beyond to develop and implement strategies to challenge inequality and realise socio-economic rights. SERI’s conviction is that it is the people who are on the receiving end of poverty and inequality who are best placed to devise and implement strategies to challenge them. We provide legal advice and representation, research services and advocacy support to our clients and partners. We act to protect and expand the political spaces in which individuals and communities organise and press for social change.

Today we had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Christian Maywurm, a consultant for compliance, finance administration, and management at Misereor. He spent valuable time with our Operations and Finance team, reviewing our financial management system. We are grateful for his expertise and insights on how we can strengthen our processes.

Last night, SERI together with Equal Education Law Centre and Centre for Applied Legal Studies convened to celebrate the achievements of the Bertha Justice Fellowship Programme and explore ways to support the next generation of lawyers in our sector. Over the past 12 years, the Bertha Justice Fellowship Programme, through generous support from the Bertha Foundation, promoted movement lawyering and facilitated a global network of public interest lawyers. We were honoured to have several of SERI’s Justice Fellows from past years join us (pictured below with our Executive Director).
