This past Friday, the Atlantis Special Economic Zone had the pleasure of hosting representatives from the Bezos Earth Fund and the The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), including Nicole Iseppi, Mimi Kalinda, Ziyad Ismail, and Chipo Hamukoma. Their visit focused on exploring potential collaborations for skills development to support the just transition in South Africa, especially in Atlantis. The day included a tour of GRI Renewable Industries (GRI), led by Daniel Erasun Mora and Graham de Koker, to showcase how skills like welding and boiler making are critical to the transition. The group then visited Lesedi-Skills Academy, where Julian Van der Poel introduced ongoing training initiatives. We observed young people training in welding and mechanical fitting. The final stop was West Coast TVET College, where we explored workshops in mechanical fitting, turning, electrical work, and the 4IR Centre. Special thanks to Daphney Loji and Mr. Kazadi, Senior Lecturer in the Engineering Department, for hosting us at the college. This visit highlighted the importance of ensuring that the just transition brings decent jobs, social inclusion, and poverty eradication by equipping people with the skills needed to face current challenges and embrace future opportunities. #ASEZ #GEAPP #GRI_SA #LESEDI_SKILLS_ACADEMY #WCC Selwyn Willoughby Jean Antonio Baartman
