Iziko Museums of South Africa is a vibrant organisation and centre of cultural activity, made up of 11 national museums.

About us

IZIKO is an isiXhosa word, meaning ‘hearth’, traditionally and symbolically the social centre of the home; a place associated with warmth, kinship, and ancestral spirits. Here food is prepared and shared, stories are told and knowledge passed from one generation to the next. Similarly, the museums that make-up Iziko are spaces for cultural interaction. Iziko is a flagship heritage institution – and southern and South Africa’s largest and oldest museum, now in its 193rd year of existence is a change agile and dynamic institution –adaptive to the requirements of our developing democracy and the ever-evolving cultural, scientific and heritage sector. Ubuntu is what guides us. We nurture the communities we serve and the partners who share our passion. In our work, we trust and respect diversity, inspiring our visitors through creative interpretation, education, research and information sharing – with professional and consistent high-quality service. Iziko comprises of the following museums, each with its own history and character: • South African Museum and Planetarium and Digital Dome • South African National Gallery • Maritime Centre, including the museum ship, SAS Somerset • Slave Lodge Museum • William Fehr Collection (at the Castle of Good Hope) • Michaelis Collection (at the Old Town House) • Rust en Vreugd Museum • Bertram House Museum • Koopmans-de Wet House Museum • Groot Constantia Museum • Bo-Kaap Museum In addition, the renovated Social History Centre on Church Square provides a state-of-the-art facility to accommodate our Social History collections and library. The Natural History Library is located at the South African Museum, and the Art Library in the Annexe adjacent to the South African National Gallery. Iziko has successfully operated a Mobile Museum outreach programme for the past 15 years. Iziko was thus envisaged as space for all South Africans to gather, nourish body and soul, and share stories and knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

  • It is nearly 100 years since the discovery of the ‘Taung Child’, the 2-million-year-old fossilised skull of a young Australopithecus africanus. It was discovered in 1924 in Taung, South Africa. It is also 50 years since the discovery of ‘Lucy’, the 3-million-year-old fossil of Australopithecus afarensis from East Africa. Join Iziko Museums of South Africa and @PAST in celebrating these milestones in human evolution with a public lecture by renowned palaeoanthropologist, Yohannes Haile-Selassie. His talk, "100 Years after Taung and 50 years After Lucy: Where we are in our understanding of Human Origins" will be held on Tuesday, 6 August, in the TH Barry Lecture Theatre,Iziko South African Museum, 25 Queen Victoria Road at 3pm. • CALL FOR PAPERS: A BI-CENTENARY OF IZIKO SOUTH AFRICAN MUSEUM! In 2025, South Africa’s oldest conventional museum, the Iziko South African Museum (ISAM), will celebrate its 200th anniversary! For almost two centuries, ISAM has been a pioneer in natural history, art, and social/cultural history. However, it also participated in unethical research and exhibition programs in ethnography and racial science. This bicentenary offers a unique opportunity for professionals, practitioners, and academics to reflect on ISAM’s rich and complex heritage. Iziko Museums of South Africa and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) are producing a joint publication, and we invite scholars, practitioners, and professionals to submit chapter proposals. We seek contributions that critically examine ISAM's impact on South Africa’s heritage landscape and its influence on international museum practices. Topics can include natural history, social/cultural history, art, astronomy/planetaria, built environment, architecture, education, outreach, and public programs. Proposals may address research, exhibition, collections, digitization, conservation, and education. Submit your proposals and be part of this significant scholarly work to Ms Buhle Dyakopu at [email protected] by 31 July 2024.  For more information visit https://lnkd.in/d4ciA5Ss #IzikoMuseums #ISAM200

  • “Freedom isn’t free!” Commemorating 30 years of Democracy with Iziko Museums of South Africa The 27th April 1994 is a bittersweet moment for those who remember. Some already up at the crack of dawn; some - filled with nervous excitement and even those filled with apprehensive uncertainty went to their voting stations, stood in queues, weathered the elements and waited their turn to make their mark. That morning was pregnant with the hopes of millions, unified in a single vision – a better life for all. Now, thirty years later, Iziko Museums of South Africa will commemorate that moment in history by providing *free entry to selected Iziko Museums on Freedom Day, 27 April 2024.
