Transforming the built environment for people and planet to thrive.
About us
The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) is an independent, non-profit organisation, established in September 2007 to promote green building in South Africa’s commercial property industry. A green building is a building which is energy efficient, resource efficient and environmentally responsible- which incorporates design, construction and operational practices that significantly reduce or eliminate its negative impact on the environment and its occupants. Building green is an opportunity to use resources efficiently and address climate change while creating healthier and more productive environments for people to live and work in. The GBCSA is a full member of the World GBC (www.worldgbc.org). GBCSA Vision: To lead the transformation of the South African property industry to ensure that all buildings are designed, built and operated in an environmentally sustainable way to allow South Africans to work and live in healthy, efficient and productive environments. GBCSA Mission: To promote, encourage and facilitate green building in the South African property and construction industry through market-based solutions. The main functions of the GBCSA are to: 1. Promote and raise awareness of green building, 2. Establish a green building rating system for South Africa, 3. Provide green building education, and 4. Make knowledge and resources available to assist those that want to implement green building.

🎉 What a week it was! Last week was the launch of the new Green Star New Build Version 2 tool. 🎉 We co-hosted events in Joburg and Cape Town to share with our Accredited Professionals, and broader green building community, the very exciting new attributes of this tool. Many of the guests had been involved in the actual technical development of this tool, so it was a very special occasion to be able to mark the completion of Phase 1 of Green Star V2 with them! 🌟 A huge thanks to Balwin Properties, who have been instrumental in supporting the development of this tool through vital funding, and who co-hosted both events with us at their 6-Star Green Star rated offices in Joburg, and their De Aan-Zicht Estate in Cape Town. The De Aan-Zicht lifestyle centre is also going to be one of our 8 V2 pilot projects. 💚 It was indeed a special week, and we are so appreciative of our green building community for coming out to support and share this moment with us. 📸 A few snaps of the event are shown here. There were too many great pics to limit ourselves to this post, so we’re sharing full albums at: 📍 Joburg event, Tuesday 3rd December: https://lnkd.in/d7kTDvgp 📍 Cape Town event, Thursday 5th December: https://lnkd.in/dRKvrt7b 🚀 Watch this space as we share more details about the tool, and its rollout, in the coming months! #GreenStarAfrica #greenbuildingcommunity With Lisa Reynolds, Georgina Smit, Dash Coville, Abi Godsell, Steve Brookes, Matthew Whalley, Lloyd Tinney

🌿 We are thrilled to be part of the Roha Advanced Multi-Specialty Hospital’s sustainability journey. Not only do we celebrate that this is the first healthcare facility in Ethiopia—with its environment-first design—to receive EDGE certification, we also commend the extra sustainable development steps taken for the project and the surrounds of the project. The planting of the Miyawaki forest surrounding the facility means that it is well on its way towards its carbon neutrality targets. GBCSA lauds the commitment and innovation of this pioneering project. #EDGEbuildings #greenbuildings
