Nothing's perfect. For me, the art of engineering comes down to two things: 1️⃣ Knowing how imperfect is good enough to do the job. 2️⃣ Knowing what "the job" actually is. This year we got better at both of these. However, 2️⃣ feels like something we'll always be chasing after, something we can always get better at, something we'll never tick off our #TODO list. The challenge is that no matter how many technical specifications you write or contracts you sign, "the job" is a moving goalpost. It is defined by some complex entropic interplay of socioeconomics. At BMEC we use our Discovery Phase, weekly project management updates, and continuous issue triage and prioritisation to track "the job" and make sure we are delivering tangible technical value for our clients and this works as well as one could hope. Having said that, it is far from perfect. Our projects are hugely complex, challenging if not impossible to scope up front, and we can't always grasp the commercial perspective of our clients. So, this is my holiday thinking project: how can we measure and minimise the error between the commercial impact of our technical output and that which would best serve our clients. In a recent meeting with a VC we got some hugely validating feedback. They said they had never before come across a dev house with such an in-depth understanding of what it takes to go from concept to success. Did you know it was recently the Excel World Championship? Did you know this even existed? 🤭 Excel is an amazing "software development tool" and I often tell people that software development is the best computer game in the world. So, with the rise of e-sports, an Excel World Championship makes perfect sense. 🤓 If I had known 10 years ago "Elite Excel Athlete" was a feasible career path, BMEC Technologies (Pty) Ltd might not even exist. 😂 I'm no world champion but I did create this multi-dimensional plot called a SEP chart which parametrically computes the flight envelope for any aircraft based on a countless number of input variables. A SEP chart is an amazing tool that tells pilots exactly how fast they can climb, how tight they can turn and how many g they can pull. Go outside the lines and you will fall out the sky. Ironically, even though I am an #AeronauticalEngineer, the one type of engineering we don't do at BMEC (at least not yet) is aircraft. Kicking off another exciting med-tech project today 🤓 The unique challenge presented by medical device development is often testing and so it is not uncommon for biomedical engineers (myself included) to offer themselves up as test subjects. I've even overcome my fear of needles on occasion to get some quick test data 💉🩸🤮. However, when it comes to cardiac devices I'm strangely not so keen 😂.
