Today ACT is attending ICASA’s Sectoral Consultative Meeting, marking a significant step towards shaping a thriving digital ecosystem through meaningful engagement and collaboration. The consultative process serves as a platform for ACT to engage in constructive dialogue with the regulatory body, ensuring that the voices of key industry stakeholders, such as major mobile network operators and technology providers, are heard. ACT’s role as a representative of six major telecommunications operators positions it at the forefront of advocating for policies that promote fair competition, innovation, and investment. By participating in this consultation, ACT aims to ensure that regulations are aligned with the dynamic needs of the digital ecosystem, particularly in areas such as spectrum management, network infrastructure development, and the equitable distribution of digital services. This consultative approach is essential in fostering a regulatory environment that is both conducive to industry growth and responsive to the evolving challenges of digital transformation. For ACT, this meeting underscores its commitment to working with ICASA and other policymakers to drive an inclusive digital economy that benefits all South Africans. It also provides an opportunity to address issues such as OTT regulation, 2G/3G migration, e-waste management, and the broader transformation and sustainability agenda in ICT, which are all critical to ACT's strategic priorities.

The success of #OTT services heavily relies on high-quality, reliable network infrastructure. As Nomvuyiso Batyi, CEO of the Association of Communications and Technology (ACT), #SouthAfrica stated, “What we’re saying is that the OTTs should contribute to the network upgrades.” #ACT is advocating for OTT platforms to contribute to the costs of building and maintaining this crucial infrastructure, given their significant role in generating internet traffic. With mobile operators like Vodacom and MTN South Africa investing up to 41 billion rand ($2 billion) annually in network expansion, the need for OTT providers to step up and support these efforts is critical. The traditional #A2P messaging market is also facing substantial losses as users increasingly turn to OTT messaging services, putting additional financial strain on #telecom operators who rely on this revenue stream. Telcos, - Are you ready to reclaim your 'fair share'? - Are you ready to combat the OTT threat? - Are you ready to reduce your reliance on competitors for A2P messaging? - Are you ready to disrupt the disruptors?
