Cosmographer Young Widows have the X factor, a je ne sais quoi. The sound is brooding and sinister, evoking bleakness and alienation with ease. At the same time, the songwriting is super tight and thoughtful - compositionally this band is miles ahead of most other noise rock/alternative rock outfits. If you liked Deftones' Gore and would like to listen to it done right, check out this compilation. Amazing group. Favorite track: Swamped And Agitated (Original Version).

A.T.L Don't usually care much for B-side albums, with a couple of rare exceptions (Deftones, Colour Revolt). This album is one of those exceptions. Young Widows haven't had a single weak record, so hearing new songs from throughout their discography is great. Favorite track: In My Living Room.

Since their inception in 2006, Young Widows have released four studio albums – each pushing their restless drive
towards the incomparable a little further. Those albums – Settle Down City (2006), Old Wounds (2008), In and Out of Youth and Lightness (2011), and Easy Pain (2014) – were as bruising as they were brilliant, as menacing as they were mysterious.

DECAYED: Ten Years of Cities, Wounds, Lightness, and Pain perfectly charts Young Widows' evolution from inspired post-hardcore trio to peerless entity crafting profound combinations of post-punk, noise rock, heavy psych, and gothic folk. The fifteen tracks in this collection originally appeared on stand-alone singles, b-side, splits with like- minded artists (including Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Pelican, Melt-Banana, and MY DISCO), and rare compilations. Four of them have never been released until now.

Of the many impressive aspects of Young Widows' decade-plus run as a band, perhaps most remarkable is the quality and breadth of music they made that didn't appear on their albums. Every song here is a standout track from the evolving eras of the band, and as with all things Young Widows, DECAYED pays respect to the past while planting roots for the future.

MONO is one of those bands that I read so much about, and I’ve wanted to see them for years. We’ll finally, I got to see them at the Foro Independencia, April/2024, in Guadalajara, MX. What a show, first in line, grabbed a chair and sat smack dab in the middle of the stage, against the rail. The place was packed, and I was blown away. Went to Bandcamp and bought Nowhere Now Here, and told Perro, “you gotta hear this”, been sharing it with all my friends ever since. MONO, such an amazing band. Stephen Huerta
