What is Tavneos used for?
Tavneos (avacopan) is commonly used to treat people with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV), which is a group of rare disorders that damage your blood vessels.
Tavneos may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.
How does Tavneos work (mechanism of action)?
Tavneos works by blocking a receptor in your immune system to reduce inflammation.

How is Tavneos supplied (dosage forms)?
Tavneos is available as 10 mg oral capsules that are taken by mouth.
How should I store Tavneos?
Tavneos should be stored at room temperature, between 68 F to 77 F (20 C to 25 C). It can be exposed to temperatures between 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C) for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Store in a cool, dry place.
Side Effects
What are the most common side effects of Tavneos?
The most common side effects of Tavneos are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Headache
- High blood pressure
- Rash
- Tiredness
- Dizziness
- Stomach pain
- Burning or tingling
- Liver problems (see below)

What are the serious side effects of Tavneos?
While less common, the most serious side effects of Tavneos are described below, along with what to do if they happen.
Severe Allergic Reactions. Tavneos may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop taking Tavneos and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.
- Breathing problems or wheezing
- Racing heart
- Fever or general ill feeling
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
- Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
- Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
- Stomach cramps
- Joint pain
Angioedema. Tavneos may cause a rare reaction called angioedema. The usual symptoms of this reaction include swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat. Stop taking this medicine and contact your healthcare provider if you have this type of swelling. If you are having trouble breathing, get medical attention right away.
Liver Damage. Liver damage, also called hepatotoxicity, can happen when taking Tavneos. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of liver damage.
- Nausea or vomiting
- Stomach or belly pain
- Fever
- Weakness or unusual tiredness
- Itching
- Loss of appetite
- Light-colored poop
- Dark-colored urine
- Your skin or the whites of your eyes turning yellowish in color (also called jaundice)
Hepatitis B Virus Reactivation. If you have hepatitis B virus in your body or have had hepatitis B in the past, Tavneos could make the virus active again. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests before starting Tavneos and may monitor you for infection during treatment and up to 6 months after treatment. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of hepatitis.
- Unusual tiredness
- Your skin or the whites of your eyes turning yellowish in color (also called jaundice)
- Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite
- Dark color pee
- Fever or chills
- Pain in your side
- Stool (poop) that is clay-colored
Serious Infections. Tavneos can increase the risk of serious infections, like pneumonia or urinary tract infections. Call your healthcare provider if you have an infection or any of the following symptoms.
- Burning, stinging, or pain when you pee
- Cough or coughing up blood
- Fever, sweats, chills, or muscle aches
- Shortness of breath
- Earache or headache
- Diarrhea or stomach pain
- Weight loss
Warnings & Precautions
Who should not use Tavneos?
Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not take Tavneos.
- Avacopan
- Tavneos
- Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed
Your pharmacist can tell you all of the ingredients in Tavneos.
Serious Infections. Do not take Tavneos if you have a serious infection (see the Side Effects section). Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of infection.
What should I know about Tavneos before using it?
Do not take Tavneos unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Take it as prescribed.
Swallow Tavneos whole and take it with water and food. Do not chew, cut, or crush Tavneos.
Do not share Tavneos with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.
Keep Tavneos out of the reach of children.
Tavneos can affect your alertness or coordination. Do not drive or do other activities that require alertness or coordination until you know how Tavneos affects you.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Tavneos?
Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Tavneos is right for you.
In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.
Current and Past Health Conditions. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the following.
- Hepatitis B or hepatitis C
- Liver problems or abnormal liver function tests
- Infection
Other Medicines and Supplements. Tavneos may interact with other medicines and supplements. Before taking Tavneos, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details.
Pregnancy. It is not known if or how Tavneos could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant.
Breastfeeding. It is not known if Tavneos passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should take Tavneos while breastfeeding.

Interactions
Does Tavneos interact with foods or drinks?
There are no known interactions between Tavneos and foods or drinks.
It is unknown if drinking alcohol will affect Tavneos. The risk of dizziness may be increased if you drink alcohol while taking Tavneos.
Does Tavneos interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?
Always tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using.
Some other medicines may alter the blood levels of Tavneos, and vice versa. Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take or have recently taken, especially the following.
- Simvastatin, a medicine commonly used for high cholesterol
- Rifampin, a medicine commonly used to treat an infection called tuberculosis
- Itraconazole (Sporanox, Tolsura), a medicine commonly used for fungal infections

Overdose/Missed Dose
What should I do if I accidentally use too much Tavneos?
If you or someone else has used too much Tavneos, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Tavneos?
If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and only take the next dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
