About VIP

The Voting Information Project’s mission is to provide voters with reliable, authoritative voting location information wherever they search for it online.

VIP makes polling places, early vote and ballot drop-off locations, certain ballot information, and other election data easily accessible on a range of platforms, including search engines and social media sites. Advocacy organizations, colleges and universities, and government entities also refer voters to VIP.

VIP was created in 2008 as a joint effort of state and local election officials, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and Google. Since 2018, the project has been run by Democracy Works, a nonpartisan civic technology nonprofit whose mission is to provide voters with the tools, information, and support they need to participate in every election, from national to local.

VIP currently works with more than 40 states and the District of Columbia. We are honored to have the support of hundreds of election officials who help voters make their voices heard.

Our Data

All of the data we publish comes directly from government sources. As an election approaches, VIP collects, reviews, and publishes the most up-to-date information on where to vote. Most of this information is provided and reviewed by election administrators, while some information is gathered from election offices by our team.

Once approved, the data is published on the Google Civic Information API. This open format makes authoritative election data available and accessible to all.

Our voting information tool

Any organization can use our customizable and embeddable Voting Information Tool. By entering their residential address, voters can use this tool to find polling locations, contact information for local election officials, and other information to help them successfully cast their ballots.

Our Team

The VIP team consists of election experts, software engineers, and data professionals at Democracy Works. Each member of our staff undergoes rigorous training in important election and technology topics. All of our data is collected and quality assured by these human experts and we do NOT rely on artificial intelligence to gather, review, or publish information.

Our Funders

As a project of Democracy Works, we're supported by the generosity of donors. Our funders include reputable organizations like Google, Pew Charitable Trusts, the Civic Responsibility Forum, and more. In 2023, Democracy Works received the largest single donation in its history from Yield Giving, the charitable fund of philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
