Our History

In the years following 9/11, brothers John Ackerly, White House policy director, and Will Ackerly, NSA cloud security architect, observed three critical problems:

Federal agencies failed to share information and "connect the dots" across silos.

The Patriot Act opened the floodgates for broad information gathering and surveillance.

There was no easy-to-use technology to enable secure, private, and controlled information sharing.

To address these challenges, Will Ackerly invented the Trusted Data Format (TDF), a security standard that binds granular policy and access controls to sensitive information shared with others.

And so, Virtru was born:

Early Years

Innovating on the Trusted Data Format (TDF) standard, Virtru lays the foundation for a data-centric security revolution, beginning with email workflows.
