The young medical technology company inveox from Garching near Munich is making cancer diagnoses safer and pathological laboratories more profitable through automation and is still on course for success one year after its foundation. Awarded first place in the "Start-up of 2017" ranking, the company is now entering the Series A investment round with 23 full-time employees. High time to ask the two founders Maria Driesel and Dominik Sievert about their personal recipe for success.

Has the entrepreneur always been in you?

Dominik Sievert:
Even as a teenager I knew that I wanted to make a difference through innovation and help seriously ill people, such as cancer patients, through scientific innovations. At that time I had not dared to dream that this would be possible within the framework of my own company.

Maria Driesel:
I already had a fundamental entrepreneurial spirit when I was at school. In the course of his studies he became more and more concrete and was strengthened and promoted in the Manage&More program.

Did the experience you gained at Manage&More play a role in your foundation?

Dominik Sievert:
Of course. At Manage&More we have gained valuable insights into the start-up scene and acquired key skills that we both felt were essential for our own start-up: how to generate new ideas, evaluate innovations or even develop concrete business models that exist in practice.

Maria Driesel:
I would probably not have recognized the product and business potential in the conventional pathology processes without my Manage&More background, which ultimately formed the basis for the founding idea of inveox.

What does Manage&More mean to you today?

Maria Driesel:
I learned a lot at Manage&More, including two essential things: Firstly, to recognize innovation potential. On the other hand, to actively pursue innovation. The former was the prerequisite for deriving an innovative business model from a chance encounter with a pathologist in the USA, which ultimately led to the founding of inveox. The latter enables us to drive forward dynamic and ambitious product development on a daily basis that ensures future viability in line with our well thought-out business strategy.

Dominik Sievert:
Alumni, mentors, investors and companies we got to know within the framework of Manage&More still form the core of our corporate network today. Even the innermost core: Maria and I had also met at Manage&More. We are very grateful for that. In this respect, inveox is in a way a visible success of Manage&More.

What is the connection between personality and leadership for you? And: How do you rate the Academy Week's offer in this context?

Maria Driesel:
I see the Academy Week at Schloss Ellmau as an important step in my development - both professionally and personally. The final decision to take the step into foundation came with the seminar series "Orientation through self-reflection". Since then, I have profited daily from the "Leadership through Humanity" course: In dealing with my teams, authenticity and empathy in a leadership style have proven themselves to me. In addition to innovative strength and quality standards, credibility and humanity are core characteristics and fundamental values in our company.

Dominik Sievert:
My personal learning: A start-up is also a company that lives not only from the business idea but also decisively from the development and realization of values. Many people are unaware that founders are also managers who are often challenged as leaders at an early age: They are not only responsible for the development of their start-ups, but also of their employees. The Karl Schlecht Foundation's scholarships for young executives offer a unique opportunity for personal and professional development. For example, the intensive humanistic and entrepreneurial approach to my own personality, the prerequisites I have brought along, and individual, long-term goals, have strengthened my awareness of the same questions and needs of the people around me, especially my employees: Only understanding for oneself opens the view for others. This is important - for founders as well as for top managers.
