What is

Geography?
Geography- is the study of the lands,
features and inhabitants,and
phenomena of the earth.Geography is
an all- encompassing decipline that
seeks an understanding of earth and it's
human and natural complexities.
-The word geography comes from the
Greek word "GEO"(Earth's,land or
ground) and "GRAPHIA"(to write,an art,
or a study).
-As an academic decipline, geography
seeks to answer old questions such as
"Where am I in this world?" or " Where
am I in the context of the world?".
Important Personalities in Geography:
1.Anaximander(610-546 BCE)- a pre-
Socratic Greek philosopher,Biologist, and
astronomer.He also considered as one of the
first, if not the first,Geographer.
-He also a Greek philosopher who was the
first to develop a "COSMOLOGY" or
"SYSTEMATIC" political view of the world.

- He drew a map of the known "WORLD"


and he may also built a " CELESTIAL GLOBE".
-According to
Anaximander the
basic stuff of the
universe was
something he
called"APEIRON".in
Greek APEIRON
means something
like"Unlimited"or"
Undeffirentiated".
- Pythagoras is one
of his pupils.
-He also known as
the father of
cosmology
2.Strabo(64-
20 BCE)-a
greek
Geographer who
coined the term
GEOGRAPHIA,
which was also
the title of his
17-volume
series on
geographical
studies.
-Strabo is considered the "Father of Regional
geography" because he substituted division has
natural boundaries(such as mountains,rivers,etc)

-Strabo was the first to introduce the concept of


classification and regionalization in Geography.he
was the first to describe the weather patterns and
the theory of profoundness of the earth.
3.Erastosthenes
(276-194 BCE)-
he was an Ancient
Greek polymaths,a
mathematician,geo
grapher,
poet,antronomer,an
d music theorist.he
was a man of
learning, becoming
a chief librarians at
the library of
Alexandria.
-using geometry,he became the first to have
calculated accurately the circumference of
earth.
-He invented a system of longitude and latitude and
made a map of the known "WORLD".he also design a
system for finding prime numbers ,whole numbers
that can only divided by themselves or by the number

- He also know as the "Father of


Geography".
4.Ptolemy(100-
178 CE)-claudius
Ptolemy was an
Alexandrian,
Mathematician,
astronomer,,astrolo
ger, Geographer
and music theorist
who wrote about a
dozen scientific
treatises,three of
which were
important to
later"byzantine,
Islamic and western
european science.
-he was formulating the Trigonometry in
mathematics.

-His work on the lengths of chords in a circle is


considered the earliest surviving table of
trigonometric functions.

-Islamic astronomers like Al-battani and Al-


Biruni studied Ptolemy's work .
5.Edrisi-an Arab
Geographer and
descendant of
profet
Mohammed,who
collected all
known
geographical
information of his
time.
-Muhhamad al-idrisi was born in cueta,then
belonging to the almoravid dynasty.

-His full name is Abu Abdullah Muhammad


al-idrisi al-Qurtubi al-hasani as-Sabti, or
simply al-idrisi.
6.Ibn
Battuta(1304-
1368 CE)-was an
Moroccan explorer
who published his 30-
year journey in his
book rihla(journey).he
travelled farther and
longer than Marco
Polo by visiting all the
places in the known
muslim world,as well
as non-muslim lands.
-Over a period of thirty years from 1325-1354,ibn
Battuta visited most of North Africa, Middle
East,East Africa,central Asia,south Asia, southeast
Asia, China, Iberian peninsula,and west Africa.

-He dictated an account of his journey, Title "A gift to


those who contemplate the wonders of cities and
the marvels of traveling,but commonly known as the
"Rihla".
-His full name is abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn
abd Allah al-lawati.
Fields of Geography:
1.Physical Geography-is a decipline which
studies the changes in the natural patterns and
processes of earth's surface over time.
2.Human Geography-is a decipline which
studies the relationship of people, communities and
cultures across space and place.
3.Integrated Geography-is a decipline which
studies how human activities impact the
environment through the analysis of the shifts in
landforms and cycles of natural resources.
4.Geomatics-is a decipline which focuses on the
scientific management of geographic data.it involves
the methodology by which data are gathered,
processed,stored,and delivered to users using the
aid of the latest computer software and hardware.

5.Regional Geography-is a decipline which


focuses on a particular region on the surface of
the earth.
