Stem Cells
During the development of an embryo, most of the cells become
specialised. They cannot later change to become a different type of
cell. But embryos contain a special type of cell called stem cells.
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can produce many more
cells of the same type. These can grow into any type of cell found in
the body from differentiation.

Embryonic Stem Cells
Embryos contain a special type of
cell called stem cells. These can grow
into any type of cell found in the
body. They are not specialised. Stem
cells can be removed from human
embryos that are a 4-5 days old, for
example, from unused embryos left
over from fertility treatment.

Adult Stem Cell
Some stem cells remain in the bodies of adults as adult stem cells.
Adult stem cells are rare and found at certain locations only. For
example, brain, eyes, blood, heart, liver, bone marrow, skin, muscle.
They can differentiate only into cells from the type of tissue where
they are found. Their role is to replace body cells that die through
injury and disease. For example, bone marrow cells can differentiate
into blood cells and cells of the immune system, but not other cell
types.
Bone marrow
LO.Understand the
role of stem cells.
Bone marrow is a spongy material that
fills the bones. It contains early blood
cells, called stem cells. These develop
into red blood cells, white blood cells
and platelets. Normally stem cells in
your bone marrow keep dividing to make
new blood cells. This keeps the numbers
of cells circulating in your blood within
a normal range.

brand new organs or be injected into damaged ones
