"STAR WORDS: A
GALACTIC
ADVENTURE"
What's the name of the big space family that has the Sun as
its center, with eight planets and their moons, plus dwarf
planets, asteroids, comets, and tons of other tiny, icy space
stuff?
What's the word that describes a thrilling
journey where you might climb mountains,
sail across oceans, or explore mysterious
forests, meeting new friends and having
fun while finding hidden treasures and
solving puzzles?
WHAT'S THE WORD THAT MEANS ALL THE
TREES, ANIMALS, PLANTS, OCEANS,
AND SKIES AROUND US—THE PLACE
WHERE ANIMALS PLAY, BIRDS SING, AND
EVERYTHING WORKS TOGETHER TO KEEP
OUR WORLD GREEN AND HAPPY?
IMAGINE A LITTLE CAT WITH
BIG, WIDE EYES, ALWAYS
SNIFFING AROUND, PEEKING
INTO EVERY CORNER, AND
ASKING LOTS OF QUESTIONS
BECAUSE IT WANTS TO KNOW
ABOUT EVERYTHING AROUND
IT. WHAT'S THE WORD THAT
DESCRIBES THIS KIND OF
PLAYFUL, EAGER-TO-LEARN
BEHAVIOR?
Rain is like a friendly cloud with a big watering can,
sprinkling tiny drops of water all over the earth. It helps
the plants grow, fills the rivers, and gives everyone a
nice, cool drink. What do we call this gentle shower
from the sky?
TEACHER JAIME IS LIKE A BRAVE LION
WHO WALKS THROUGH THE JUNGLE WITH
ITS HEAD HELD HIGH AND A POWERFUL
ROAR. IT KNOWS IT CAN DO ANYTHING IT
SETS ITS MIND TO, AND IT'S NOT AFRAID TO
TRY NEW THINGS. WHAT'S THE WORD FOR
THIS KIND OF BOLD AND FEARLESS
THE SUN
The Sun is the center of the Solar
System and is composed mostly of
hydrogen and helium. It is the
source of the energy which makes
life on Earth possible. The eight
planets orbit around the Sun in
elliptical orbits.
MERCURY
Mercury is the closest planet to the
Sun. Because it is so close to the
Sun, it is very hot in Mercury
during the daytime. The
temperature can reach up to 430
degrees Celsius (806 degrees
Fahrenheit).
VENUS
Venus is the second planet from the
Sun. It is between Mercury and
Earth. Even though it is farther from
the Sun, Venus gets hotter than
Mercury during the daytime. It
becomes hot because it has a thick
and dense layer of gases surrounding
it.
EARTH
Earth is the third planet from the Sun.
It lies in what scientists call the
“Goldilocks zone”, which means it is at
a distance that that is not too close or
too far away from the Sun. The
distance from Earth to the Sun is one of
the most important factors that enable
the planet to support life.
MARS
Mars is the fourth planet from the
Sun. It is between Earth and Jupiter.
The atmosphere on Mars is quite
dusty. The dust is blown around by
the wind in huge dust devils. Dust
devils are strong, well-formed
swirls of wind and dust.
JUPITER
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the
Sun. It is the biggest planet in the
solar system. It is even bigger than
all the other planets put together. It
has a small, rocky core. The rest of
it is made of liquid and gas clouds.
SATURN
Saturn is the sixth planet from the
Sun. Like Jupiter, it also has a
small, rocky core. The rest of it is
also made of liquid and gas
clouds. It is smaller than Jupiter,
but it is still a big planet. It is
more than 700 times the size of
Earth.
URANUS
Uranus is the seventh planet from the
Sun. It is a freezing cold planet with
a rocky and icy core. Its mantle or
middle layer is composed of molten
iron. The outermost layer is an
atmosphere of methane, which makes
Uranus appear blue-green in color.
NEPTUNE
Neptune is the eighth planet from the
Sun. It is the most distant planet in the
solar system. It is about 30 times
farther from the Sun than Earth.
Beyond Neptune, there are dwarf
planets, asteroids, and comets.
ASTEROIDS
Asteroids are huge metallic rocks moving
around the Sun. They are covered in
regolith, which is a layer of fine rock and
dust particles. They have craters or holes
which are caused by their collision to
other space objects.
COMETS
Comets are icy, dusty rocks that orbit
the Sun along an elongated path.
When comets come close to the Sun,
the frozen water and gases heat up
creating a tail of gas and dust
particles.
METEORS
Meteors are rock pieces from outer
space that enter the Earth’s
atmosphere. As they quickly travel
through the thick atmosphere, they
burn and glow. They look like
streaks of light shooting across the
sky.
