The Indian Air Force

History Of The IAF


The IAF was officially
established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the Indian Empire and the prefix Royal was added in 1945 in recognition of its services during World War II.

After India achieved

independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, the Royal Indian Air Force served the Union of India, with the prefix being dropped when India became a republic in 1950

Motto Of The Indian Air Force


The Motto of Indian Air Force has been taken

from eleventh chapter of the Gita. He Discourse given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra during the Great War of Mahabharata. The Lord is showing His Supreme Divine form to Arjuna and the great form of the Lord is reaching the sky with glory, evoking fear and loss of self-control in the mind of Arjuna.

The Indian Air Force, similarly, aims


to overwhelm the adversaries with application of aerospace power in defence of the nation.

Commands
The Indian Air Force is divided into five
operational and two functional commands. Each Command is headed by an Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief with the rank of Air Marshal. The purpose of an operational command is to conduct military operations using aircraft within its area of responsibility. whereas the responsibility of functional commands is to maintain combat readiness

Aside from the Training Command at

Bangalore, the centre for primary flight training is located at the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, followed by operational training at various other schools.

Central Air Command (CAC), headquartered
at Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. Eastern Air Command (EAC), headquartered at Shillong, Meghalaya. Southern Air Command (SAC), headquartered at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. South Western Air Command (SWAC), headquartered at Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Western Air Command (WAC), headquartered at Subroto Park, New Delhi

List Of Functional Commands


Training Command (TC),

headquartered at Bangalore, Karnataka.

Maintenance Command (MC),

headquartered at Nagpur, Maharashtra .

Structure
The President of India is the Supreme
Commander of all Indian armed forces and by virtue of that fact is the notional Commander-inchief of the Air Force. Chief of the Air Staff with the rank of Air Chief Marshal is the Commander of the Indian Air Force. He is assisted by six officers: a Vice Chief of the Air Staff, a Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, the Air Officer in Charge of Administration, the Air Officer in Charge of Personnel, the Air Officer in Charge of Maintenance, and the Inspector General of Flight Safety.

In January 2002, the government

conferred the rank of Marshal of the Air Force on Arjan Singh making him the first and only FIVE STAR rank officer with the Indian Air Force and ceremonial chief of the air force.

List of aircraft of the Indian Air Force


The Indian Air Force, often abbreviated as
the IAF with over 1,600 aircraft is the world's fourth largest air force after the United States Air Force, Russian Air Force and China's People's Liberation Army Air Force. The types of aircrafts the force is using can be listed as follows:

Fighter Aircraft
Sukhoi, it is heavy class,
long-range, multi-role, air superiority fighter and strike fighter. The IAF have placed an order for a total of 272 Su-30MKIs of which 153 have been inducted as of April 2011

This aircraft is known as

Vajra in the IAF. It is a French multi role, single-engine fourthgeneration jet fighter manufactured by Dassault Aviation. It was designed as a lightweight fighter based on the Mirage III in the late 1970s for the French Air Force.

The HAL Tejas is a

lightweight multi role jet fighter developed by India. It is a tailless compound delta wing design powered by a single engine.

Ground attack/Bomber aircraft


The Mikoyan MiG-27 is
a variable-geometry ground-attack aircraft, originally built by the Mikoyan in the Soviet Union and later licenseproduced in India by Hindustan Aeronautics as the Bahadur

In IAF this air Craft is

known as SHAMSHER It Single-seat allweather tactical strike, ground-attack fighter version for the French Air Force, two prototypes and 160 production aircraft built.

Trainer aircraft
The Hindustan
Aeronautics HPT-32 Deepak is an Indian prop-driven primary trainer manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The student and the instructor sit side-by-side. The aircraft can accommodate one passenger.

The HAL HJT-16 Kiran

is an Indian two-seat basic jet trainer built by Hindustan Aeronautics. Used by the Indian Air Force for intermediate training for pilots trained on the HPT-32 Deepak. It is used by the Indian Air Force aerobatic team Surya Kiran and Indian naval aerobatic team Sagar Pawans.

Transport aircraft
Known as SUTLEJ in

IAF service. Used for light weight Transport Services.

It is heavy weight

Transport Services Air Craft. Names as GAJRAJ in IAF.
