GEOMETRIC SERIES

LESSON OBJECTIVES
• To calculate the sum of the first n terms of a
finite geometric series.
• To calculate the sum to infinity of a geometric
series.
Finite Geometric Series
A finite geometric series is the expression for the sum of the
terms of a geometric sequence that comes to an end.
2, 6,18,54 is a geometric sequence
2  6  18  54 is a geometric series
The General formula for the Sum of the first n terms

Sn = Sn =
For |r| > 1 For |r | < 1

1.4.3
Example 1
Calculate the sum of the series 5 + 15 + 45 + . . . + 10 935.
a= 5
r= 3
n= ?
tn = 10 935
3(10935)  5
Sn 
3  1
Sn = 16 400

The sum of the finite geometric series is 16 400.

Finite Geometric Series

Example 2
How many terms of the series 2 + (-4) + 8 + (-16) + . . . will yield a
sum of 342? rtn  t1
Sn  ,r 1 t1 = 2
r 1 r = -2
2[(2) n  1] n= ?
342  Sn = 342
 2  1 tn = ?
-1026 = 2[(-2)n – 1]
- 513 = (-2)n - 1
-512 = (-2)n What strategy could you use to determine the value of n?

(-2)9 = (-2)n
9=n
For this geometric series, nine terms
must be added for a sum of 342.

1.4.6
Determining the First Term from a Series

Example 3
The common ratio of a geometric series is ¼ and the sum of
the first 4 terms is 1275. What is the value of the first term?

Example 4
The first and second terms of an exponential sequence
are respectively the first and third terms of a linear
sequence. The fourth term of the linear sequence is 10
and the sum of its first five terms is 60. find:
a. The first five terms of the linear sequence and the
sum of the first n terms.
b. The sum of the first n terms of the exponential
sequence.
Infinite Geometric Series
The sum of the n terms as n approaches infinity is called the
sum to infinity of the series and is designated as Sꝏ.

Thus, Sꝏ =
