Solar Fan Project Lesson 2

Solar Powered Fan Project

Lesson Objectives:
• To look at how the Solar Fan is assembled
• To understand what each component does
• To be able to correctly label each part of the fan
• To know the different symbols used in electronics

HOMEWORK - you will create a Poster on Green Issues

Solar Fan Project Lesson 2

Design Brief
To design and make an Electric Fan, which will be completed
within 8 weeks.
During the project I will look at a range of Energy Sources to see
which is the best for this project.

Components Symbols
in Electronics
Imagine drawing out a huge electronic circuit, it would take
forever, so to make things easier symbols have been create
for each component.
It also means that the symbols are universal, someone in
china can read a drawing from England without knowing any
English at all.

Copy down the following symbols into your book…

Solar Fan Project Lesson 2

LEDs emit light when an electric current passes through them.

A simple on-off switch. This type can be used to switch the power
supply to a circuit.

Resistors restrict the flow of electric current, for example a

resistor is placed in series with a light-emitting diode (LED) to
limit the current passing through the LED.

Lamps emit light when an electric current passes through them.

They have a thin wire filament which becomes very hot and glows
brightly when a current passes through it. The filament is made
from a metal with a high melting point and it is usually wound into a
small coil. Filament lamps have a shorter lifetime than most
electronic components because eventually the filament 'blows'
(melts) at a weak point.

These devices are output transducers converting electrical

energy to sound.

Batteries come in all shapes and sizes. They store electrical charge
and they provide the power.

An electric motor uses electrical energy to produce

mechanical energy, through the interaction of magnetic
fields and current-carrying conductors.

A fuse is a type of sacrificial over current protection device. Its

essential component is a metal wire or strip that melts when too
much current flows, which interrupts the circuit in which it is
connected.
