AIMS & OBJECTIVES

o This course is aim to move engineering to centre of

society through identifying the important roles that
engineering plays in influencing our life style and culture
o The contribution which engineering has made to this
intellectual history is central to this course
o The impact engineering has made in developing relevant
benefit from the complex body of knowledge which humanity
has developed e.g. theory and Darwinian natural selection,
word wide web, space exploration
o To reveal and appreciation of nature and function of
engineering knowledge
o To bring better understanding of engineering method which
is of great value to engineering education

7
What is engineering?
Engineering is all around us, so people often take it for granted, like air
and water. Ask yourself, what do I touch that is not engineered?

Engineering develops and delivers consumer goods, builds the networks

of highways, air and rail travel, and the internet, mass produced
antibiotics, creates artificial heart valves, builds lasers, and offers such
wonders an imaging technology and conveniences like microwave ovens and
compact discs.

In short, engineers make overall quality of “life possible” (William

A.Wulf, President of the National Academy
of Engineering

“Engineering is the application of science to the common purpose of life”

(Count Rumford)
“Scientists study the world as it is, engineers create the world that
never has been” (Theodore Von Karman)
8
From all these definitions, engineering contents can be further broken
down into numerous details. Some of the following are relevant in one way
or the other:
i. Engineering is an art
ii. Engineering is an approximation
iii. Engineering is measurement, estimation, forecast and projection:
River flow, noise and vibration from transport system, earthquake,
traffic volume, pollution and others.
iv. Engineering is about modeling and simulation
v. Engineering is a communication, technical report writing
and presentation

Making presentations, producing technical manuals, co ordinating

team of large scale project are all fundamental to engineering practice

9
What is engineering?
o Engineering is a broad, interdisciplinary field that has links
with
social sciences and humanities as well as natural science.
o Engineering involve the use of scientific
principles/theory in designing and manufacturing to
give rise to a product, process or structure that has
enormous impact on society.
o Natural science – Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry, Biology, Agric. Science.
o Social Science- Geography, Accounting,
Economics, Marketing
o Humanities-Copyright, Patent, Environmental law
10
Who is an Engineer

A person who is trained in the design, construction, maintaining, repairing and

operating Products and/or Systems that are targeted towards making life and
living easy for humanity.

A consultant in their respective area of expertise

A skillful manager who manages the implementation of the engineering related

decision making processes
• An Engineer is a person who has acquired basic Engineering
knowledge from an accredited higher institution in Nigeria.
• Must be a registered member of a recognised Engineering
society e.g. the NSE.
• Must have gained basic practical knowledge on Engineering
works and principles. 11
DIFFERENT ROLES OF ENGINEERS
• Engineers as Managers
• Engineers as Scientists
• Engineers as experts
• Engineers as politicians
• Engineers as academics
• Engineers as salesmen
• Engineers as entrepreneurs
• Engineers as lawyers?

12
WHAT IS A SOCIETY?

A large group of people who live together in an organized way, making

decisions about how to do things and sharing the work that needs to
be done. All people in a country, or in several similar countries, can be
referred to as a society (Cambridge Dictionary).

Engineers have roles to play in a nation/society to ensure the well

being of all individuals living within the organized system. The roles
include but not limited to the followings:
