Standard Wheelchair Measurements for
Proper Fit

• Seat height/Leg length


• Seat depth
• Seat width
• Back height
• Arm rest height
SEAT HEIGHT /LEG LENGTH
• User’s heel to popliteal fold + 2 inches
• 19.5 to 20.5 inches
To check:
• Place 2 to 3 finges under the thigh
• 2 inches floor to foot rest
If too high:
• Insufficient trunk support
• Difficulty positioning the knees beneath the table or desk
• Difficulty wreaching the drive wheel
• Poor posture
If too low:
• Difficulty with transfers
• Imporper with distribution

LEG LENGTH
If footplates are too low
• Inc. presuure on the distal post aspect of the thigh
• Dec. fxn of UE when propelling
• Unsafe mobility
If footplates are too high
• Inc. pressure on the ischial tuberosity
• Difficulty positioning beneath a desk
• Dec. tunk stability

Seat Depth
• Measure from posterior buttock, along the lateral thigh to
the popliteal fold – 2 inches
• 16 inches
To check:
• Allow 2 to 3 fingers between front edge of the seat to the
popliteal fold
If too short:
• Dec. trunk stability
• Inc with bearing on the ischial tuberosity
• Poor balance
If too long
• Inc. pressure on the popliteal area

Seat Width
• Measure widest aspect oh the buttock, hips or thigh +1.5
inches
• 18 inches
To check:
• Allow placement of the hand vertically between the
armrest and the thigh
• Both hands should be evaluated
To wide
• Difficulty propellng
• Difficulty during standing transfers
• Difficulty moving through narrow hallways
• Postural deviations: leaning on one side
To narrow
• Difficulty changing positions
• Excessive pressure to the g trochanters
• Difficulty weaing bulky outer garments
Back Height
• Measure form the seat of the chair to the axilla + 1.5
inches
• 16 to 16.5 inches
To check:
• Place 4 fingers with the hand verticallt bet the top of the
back upholstery and the floor of the axilla
• Inferior angle of the scapulae one fingerbreadth above the
back of the upholstery
• To high: difficulty in propelling and inc pressure on the
inf. angle
• To low: dec. trunk stability
Armrest height
• Measure from the seat of the chair to the olecranon process of
the user + 1 inch
• 9 inches above the chair seat
To check:
• Shoulders leveled trunk erect
• Triangle 0 post aspect of humerus top of armrest and frame of
the chair back
To high:
• Problems propelling
• Difficulty with standing transfers
• Postural deviation: shoulders are elevated
• If not used dec. trunk stability and fatigue
To low:
• Poor posture d/t excessive forward trunk inclination
• Inc. abdominal discomfort when leaning forward
• Inadequate balance
• Difficulty rising to a standing position
