BASIC ALGEBRAIC OPERATIONS

BMGT 22 – Quantitative Techniques in Business

Law of Signed Numbers
I. Addition
Like Signs:

To add two numbers having like signs, find the sum of

their absolute values (values regardless of the sign) and
prefix the common sign. The absence of a sign before a
numeral means it is positive.

Law of Signed Numbers
I. Addition
Examples of Like Signs:

1) - 3 – 4 = - 7
2) - 10 – 20 – 12 = - 42
3) 10 + 100 + 40 = 150

Law of Signed Numbers
I. Addition
Unlike Signs:

To add two numbers having unlike signs, find the

difference of their absolute values and prefix the sign of the
greater absolute value.

Law of Signed Numbers
I. Addition
Examples of Unlike Signs:

1) (- 3) + (4) = 1
2) (12) + (- 3) = 9
3) 12 + 4 + (- 15) = 1
4) - 15 + 12 – 7 = - 10

Law of Signed Numbers
II. Subtraction
To subtract two numbers, change the sign of the subtrahend,
then follow the rules of addition of signed numbers.

Law of Signed Numbers
II. Subtraction
Examples:

1) (- 10) – (- 18) = - 10 + 18 = 8
2) 12 – (- 15) = 12 + 15 = 27
3) 20 – (100) = 20 – 100 = - 80

Law of Signed Numbers
II. Subtraction
Examples: (Vertical Subtraction)

1) - 10 2) 12 3) 20 4) -8
- 18 - 15 100 + 10
+ 8 27 - 80 - 18

Law of Signed Numbers
II. Subtraction
Examples:

1) 10 – (3 + 2) = 10 – 3 – 2 = 5
2) - (3 – 4 + 2) – (3 – 5) = - 3 + 4 – 2 – 3 + 5 = 1
3) - 5 – (- 10) = - 5 + 10 = 5

Law of Signed Numbers
III. Multiplication
The product of two numbers having like signs is positive,
while the product of two numbers having unlike signs is
negative.

Law of Signed Numbers
III. Multiplication
Examples:

1) (- 4) (- 6) = 24
2) (4) (6) = 24
3) (- 4) (6) = - 24
4) (4) (- 6) = - 24

Law of Signed Numbers
IV. Division
The quotient of two numbers having like signs is positive,
while the quotient of two numbers having unlike signs is
negative.

Law of Signed Numbers
IV. Division
Examples:

1) (- 24) ÷ (- 4) = 6
2) (24) ÷ (4) = 6
3) (- 24) ÷ (4) = - 6
4) (24) ÷ (- 4) = - 6
