Amount of solute
How do we describe the
concentration of a solution?
Concentration of Solutions
Qualitative Quantitative
refers to descriptive details refers to details about an
about observations using observation that quantify
senses. observation using
numbers.
Example: Example:
diluted, concentrated percent by mass, percent by
volume
What is concentration of a solution?
Concentration of solutions measures of how much
solute is dissolved in a specific amount of solvent.

Why is it important in chemistry and in

everyday life?
What are the two types of Solution based
on its Concentration?
What is a dilute solution?
It is one in which there is a
relatively small amount of
solute dissolved in the
solution.
What is a concentrated solution?
It is a solution that contains
a large amount of solute
relative to the amount that
could dissolve.
Can you spot the difference between a
dilute and concentrated solution?
Ways of expressing Concentration

a. Percent by Mass =

b. Percent by Volume =
Ways of expressing Concentration

a. Percent by Mass =

Percent by mass expresses the concentration of a

solution as a ratio or percentage of the mass of
the solute to the mass of the solution.
When to calculate for the percent by
mass?

The mass percent is used to

express the concentration
of a solution when the mass
of a solute and the mass of
a solution is given.
A genuine sterling silver items have the
number 925 engraved on them because
this alloy is 92.5% silver by mass.

This means that for every 100 g of sterling silver,

92.5 g is silver. The other 7.5% is another metal
(usually copper) added to the silver to improve the
physical characteristics of the alloy.
Let’s try this.
1. What is the percent by mass of a salt solution by
dissolving 11 g of salt in 80 g of solution?
Given: Solution:
11 g of salt mass solute
80 g of solution mass of solution
Percent by Mass =
Required: Percent by mass
= 0.1375 x 100
= 13. 75 %
Formula:
Percent by Mass =
Let’s try this.
2. What is the percent by mass concentration of sugar
solution that contains 8 g of sugar dissolved in 15 g of
water?

Given: 8 g of sugar mass solute

15 g of water mass of solvent
Solution:
Required: Percent by mass Percent by Mass =

Formula: =

Percent by Mass = = 0.347 x 100

= 34.78 %
Ways of expressing Concentration

b. Percent by Volume =

Percent by volume expresses the concentration of

a liquid solution as a ratio or percentage of the
volume of the solute to the volume of the
solution.
When to calculate for the percent by
volume?

For the solutions that

involve a liquid solute and
a liquid solvent express the
concentration in terms of
the volumes of the
components.
Most rubbing alcohol products have a
concentration of 70%.

This means that rubbing alcohol is 70%

alcohol (usually isopropyl or ethanol)
and 30% water by volume.
Let’s try this.
3. A solution contains 50 mL of ethanol in 300 mL alcohol of
solution. What is the percent by volume concentration of the
solution?
Given: 50 mL volume solute
Solution:
300 mL volume solution
Percent by volume =
Required: Percent by volume
= 0.16 x 100

Formula: = 16 %

Percent by Mass =
Let’s try this.
4. The active ingredient in wines and other alcoholic beverages is ethanol. A 300-
mL sample of wine was found to contain 37.5 mL ethanol. What is the percent by
volume concentration of ethanol in the wine sample?

Given: 37.5 mL volume solute

Solution:
300 mL volume solution
Percent by volume =
Required: Percent by volume
= 0.125 x 100

Formula: = 12.5 %

Percent by volume =

3. A certain vinegar solution is prepared mixing 15

mL acetic acid and 250 mL water. What is the % by
volume of acetic acid?
What is your greatest takeaway from
our lesson today?
 concentration of a solution is a dynamic property that can be
adjusted as needed
 calculation of concentration is a skill valuable in laboratory work
and real-life situations
 the concept of concentration is not limited to chemistry but applies
to everyday situations, such as preparing drinks, cleaning solutions,
and food recipes
