4 Asymptotes &
Limits to ∞
Objectives:

- Review limit basics

- Find limits to infinity
- Note connections between
limits and asymptotes
In chapter 2 we learned the
basics of limits as a function
approaches a constant.
Now we’ll find limits as a
function approaches infinity.
Review A limit is the height
that a function approaches
There is a hole
at (2,3), but
Find limits
•graphically
•numerically
•algebraically
Algebraically
•try substitution
•factoring
•rationalizing
Find the limit Can you

Limits at Infinity
• When approaching infinity,
sub in large values
• For rational functions,
compare exponents
Find
=0

If the highest exponent is in

the denominator, limit = 0
Confirm with graph cont’d

y = 1/x

As x gets large,
y approaches 0

If you approach -∞ consider
if an exponent is even or odd.
Limit equals the coefficients of
terms with the highest exponent
in numerator and denominator.
What does this look like?
Horizontal asymptote at y=1
If the numerator has the
highest exponent the limit is
∞ or -∞ and therefore DNE.
Horizontal Asymptote Rules
Compare highest exponents in
numerator & denominator
If n = d limit = coefficient
If n < d limit = 0
If n > d limit = ∞
Limits like fears are often
just an illusion
