SUICIDE
• As a youth nurse, our focus on youth-friendly services involves a holistic approach
to address the specific needs of young people in combating HIV.

• We recognize the importance of comprehensive sexuality education as a

cornerstone of our efforts. In embracing technology, we engage with the youth
through edutainment, aligning with current trends on platforms like our Facebook
page, "Youth Friendly Services."
• This innovative approach aims to divert their health inquiries from informal
sources to us, health professionals, fostering a trusting relationship for open
discussions about sexual health and HIV prevention

• Today, as we gather to commemorate Movember under the theme "Ending Male

Suicide," it's crucial to address the pressing issue of male suicide in Botswana. In
2023, the state of male suicide in our country demands our attention and
collaborative efforts.
Current State of Male Suicide in Botswana:

• The statistics are indeed alarming and require our utmost attention. Over the past
few years, Botswana has experienced a worrying surge in the number of male
suicides.
• However, it is essential to bear in mind that each statistic represents an intricate
network of factors that contribute to the mental health challenges faced by our
male siblings, fathers, and companions.
• One such factor that cannot be overlooked is the cultural and religious impact on
mental health in Botswana.
• The influence of culture and religion on mental health has been widely
acknowledged, with research indicating that certain beliefs and practices can
either positively or negatively affect an individual's well-being.

• In traditional Batswana culture, men are expected to be strong and stoic,

suppressing their emotions and not showing vulnerability.

• This expectation can lead to a reluctance to seek help when struggling with
mental health issues. Similarly, some religious beliefs may stigmatize mental
illness as a sign of weakness or even possession by evil spirits.
• As a society, we need to recognize the cultural and religious impact on mental
health and work towards creating safe spaces for men to seek help without fear of
judgment or discrimination.
• It is crucial to encourage open conversations about mental health in all spheres of
life while promoting culturally appropriate interventions that take into account the
unique needs of Batswana men. By doing so, we can hope to reduce the incidence
of male suicide rates in Botswana significantly.
Cultural and Religious Impact:

• Culture and religion, particularly Christianity, play pivotal roles in shaping societal
norms. While these elements can provide support and community, they also carry
the weight of expectations that may exacerbate mental health challenges.
• It's essential to critically analyse how cultural and religious norms contribute both
positively and negatively to the state of male suicide in Botswana.
• Breaking the stigma associated with seeking help is crucial, and fostering open
conversations within communities can be a powerful step.
What Can Be Done:

• Community Awareness: Initiate community-driven awareness campaigns to

destigmatize mental health discussions.
• Accessible Mental Health Services: Advocate for and improve accessibility to
mental health services, ensuring that men feel comfortable seeking help.
• Education Programs: Implement educational programs in schools and
communities to promote emotional well-being and coping mechanisms.
Psychological State vs. Expectations:

• The societal expectations placed on men can create internal conflicts, contributing
to mental health challenges. Men may feel pressured to conform to traditional
notions of strength and resilience, often suppressing their emotional struggles.

• Emphasizing the importance of vulnerability, empathy, and emotional expression

is crucial in reshaping societal expectations.
CONCLUSION
• In conclusion, addressing male suicide requires a collective commitment. By
understanding the cultural, religious, and societal factors influencing the
psychological state of men, we can work together to break down barriers, foster
support networks, and create an environment where seeking help is not only
accepted but encouraged.
• Let Movember be a catalyst for change, a reminder that our united efforts can
truly make a difference in ending male suicide in Botswana. Thank you.
