NEITHER + Noun + NOR + Noun


Example:
• I don’t have time and I don’t have money.
ÞI have neither time nor money to go on holiday.
• Carol doesn’t have a car. She also doesn’t have a
motorbike.
ÞCarol has neither a car nor a motorbike.
NEITHER…NOR…
NEITHER + Adjective + NOR + Adjective
Example:
• Jim wasn’t surprised by what I said. He wasn’t
shocked by what I said.
ÞJim was neither surprised nor shocked by what I
said.
• Evy wasn’t embarrassed when Victoria told her to
shut up. She wasn’t angry, either.
ÞEvy was neither embarrassed nor angry when
Victoria told her to shut up.
NEITHER…NOR…
NEITHER + Verb + NOR + Verb
Example:
• My sister doesn’t drink coffee and doesn’t smoke.
ÞMy sister neither drinks coffee nor smokes.
• We didn’t see the accident. We didn’t hear it,
either.
ÞWe neither saw nor heard the accident.
• Al doesn’t play tennis. He doesn’t watch it on TV.
ÞAl neither plays nor watches tennis on TV.
NEITHER…NOR…
NEITHER + Subject 1 + NOR + Subject 2
Example:
• Mark is not very tall. His wife is not very tall, either.
ÞNeither Mark nor his wife is very tall.
• Chris didn’t come to the party. Paul didn’t come to the
party, either.
ÞNeither Chris nor Paul came to the party.
• He is not going to help us. His students are not going to
help us, either.
ÞNeither he nor his students are going to help us.
ÞNeither his students nor he is going to help us.
NEITHER…NOR…
• Neither is used as a conjunction.
• “Neither…nor…” is used to connect the same kind of word or
phrase in the sentence.
– I have neither time nor money to go on holiday. (Noun)
– Jim was neither surprised nor shocked by what I said. (Adjective)
– My sister neither drinks coffee nor smokes. (Verb)
• Neither makes a negative statement about two people or
things. => Cannot be used with other negative forms
• When the subject begins with “neither…nor…”, the verb is
determined by Subject 2.
– Neither he nor his students are going to help us.
– Neither his students nor he is going to help us.

1. Tom doesn't lie to his friends. Paul doesn't either.
Neither Tom nor Paul lies to their friends.

deny the story.
