CELL

The very beginning of life

What is Cell?
• Cells are basic unit of all living things
• Cells make up living things and carry out activities that
keep a living thing alive

Plant cell
Animal cell
Discovery Of The Cell

• In 1665, Robert Hooke used an

early compound microscope to
look at a nonliving thin slice of
cork, a plant material; termed
tem a cell
Robert Hooke Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek
• In 1674, Anton Van
Leeuwenhoek was first
observer of living cell.
• In 1883, Robert Brown
discovered nucleus
Cell Theory
The cell theory put forth by two scientist M.J. Schleiden, and
Theodor Schwann
 All living beings are made up of cells.
 Cells are the basic structural and functional unit of all
living beings.
 Every single cell arise from their pre-existing cells by
method of cell division
Number Of Cells

• Unicellular organisms are made up of single cell, e.g.

Amoeba, bacteria, chlamydomonas
• Multicellular organisms are made up of millions of cells e.g.
animals, plant

Amoeba(Unicellular organism) Elephant( Multicellular organism)

Shape Of Cells

The shape of cell varies in different organisms. the shape of plant cell is different from
that of an animal cell. They may be spherical, oval, elliptical, spindle shaped, polygonal,
columnar etc.

Oval (Chlamydomonas sp.)

Irregular (Amoeba, WBCs) Paramoecium sp
Oblong (Paramoecium sp.)
Elongated (myocytes, sperms etc)
Thread-like(neurons)
Cubicular/rectangular(intestinal cells,
skin cells, hepatocytes etc)
Myocytes
Size Of Cells

Cells vary in size. Most cells are very small. They can be observed under
microscope. Some may be large. e.g. RBC’s cell, nerve cells, amoeba,
euglena

Largest cell- Ostrich egg

Longest cell- Nerve cell

Smallest cell- Mycoplasma
Structure Of A Cell

•Although cells differ in size

and shape, the basic
structure of the cell is the
same. It is composed of
following parts:
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Cell membrane
Cell wall(plants and
bacteria only)
•Nucleus and cytoplasm
together known as Cell Structure
protoplasm.

two or more daughter cell
