Early Life:
Tansen was a famous Indian musician and one of
the nine court musicians of the Mughal Emperor
Akbar. His birth year and birthplace are unclear
but it is believed he was born around 1500 CE.
Tansen learned and perfected his musical skills in
the region around Gwalior and was a court
musician for Hindu King Raja Ramchandra Singh.
He gained widespread fame and was sent to the
Mughal court by Raja Ramchandra Singh at the
request of Emperor Akbar. Tansen is considered a
central figure in the development of Hindustani
classical music and many gharanas trace their
lineage back to him.
Schooling And Life:

He was trained by Swami Haridas, a composer from

Vrindavan who was considered to be a legendary
teacher, and specialized in the Dhrupad style of
singing. Tansen acquired his love for Dhrupad and his
interest in compositions in the local language from
Haridas. Tansen also met the Sufi mystic Muhammad
Ghaus, which brought Sufi influences to his music.
Tansen was a part of Akbar's court, which was an
attempt to integrate Hindu and Muslim traditions
within the Mughal Empire. Tansen became one of the
nine treasured Navaratnas and was given the honorific
title Mian Tansen.
His Compositions

Tansen was a prolific composer of his time and created many timeless masterpieces. His
compositions were primarily in the Dhrupad style of singing and often invoked Hindu
deities such as Krishna and Shiva. Tansen's works showcased his deep devotion and
connection to the Bhakti tradition. He was also known to have composed in Brajbhasha, a
local language that was gaining popularity during his time as a shift from Sanskrit. Tansen's
compositions blended musical and spiritual elements seamlessly, making him a revered and
highly sought-after musician in the court of Emperor Akbar. His works continue to be widely
performed and celebrated even today, and he is considered one of the greatest musicians in
the history of Indian classical music.
Miracles Associated with Him

Tansen was a legendary Indian singer who was known to perform

miracles with his singing. According to one popular legend, Tansen
was asked to light lamps by singing Raga Deepak and he successfully
lit all the lamps at once. Tansen was also said to have the ability to
bring rain by singing Raga Megh Malhar and communicate with
animals through his music. The story of Tansen taming a fierce
elephant in the court of Emperor Akbar is also famous. These
legends further added to Tansen's reputation as one of the greatest
musicians in Indian history.
Death And Legacy
Though it is said that Tansen passed away in the year 1586, there are no clear references about
the cause of his death. A few legends have it that he was consumed by the flames that he
created himself while experimenting with Raga Deepak. However, there are no proofs backing
this claim. His mortal remains were buried in Gwalior next to the tomb of Muhammad Ghaus, his
Sufi master. It is also said that there is a tamarind tree that has grown over the tomb of Tansen.
The person who chews the leaves of this magical tree is said to gain musical knowledge and a
good voice, conducive for singing.

All of Tansen’s five children went on to become great classical singers. Also, a music festival
called Tansen Samaroh is held each and every year in Gwalior during the month of
December. The festival, which is held near his tomb, attracts thousands of musicians and
aspiring singers from all over the country. Tansen Samman is an award that is given away by
the government of India to outstanding exponents of Hindustani classical music.
We ought not to be weary of
doing little things for the love
of God, who regards not the
greatness of the work, but
the love with which it is
performed.”
