Introduction to Environmental Management

Environmental management is a broad and extensively used title enveloping a

very wide-ranging, yet comprehensive subject matter. Crafting awareness based
on logic is not at all times simple or uncomplicated, not to mention the "self-
interest" of some "few good men."
For better understanding, let us commence by considering and contemplating at
the significant terms involved in Environmental Management. The words
'environment' and 'management' after all are established in various frameworks.
However, their connotation and understanding may either be in agreement or in
contrast significantly. The ability to identify these variations would provide adept
insight that may lead to the formulation of sensible environmental management
policies and programs.

Concept of Environment
In the broad-spectrum theory of systems, an environment is a composite of
outside features that operates on a system and establish their track and mode of
survival and continuity.

Natural Resources
-Resources found in nature that man uses
to meet their needs
Can people change natural resources?
YES! Anything that is crafted by humans
that does not transpire naturally in the
environment is man-made, also known as
Artificial Resources - materials. from the
natural environment that people convert to
produce other things with the aid of tools
and creativity.
Concept of Environment

Man made Natural While it is true that nature provides the things
that man need to survive, there are things that
man can actually do to improve his way of
living. Man simply will not be satisfied to live in
caves and do hunting or fishing for food.
Buildings Land-soil, mountains,
Bottled water fields Humans are gifted with the skills to transform
Paper products Water-river, lake, sea raw materials (that may be provided by
Balloon Air-oxygen nature) and produce something else.

Animals-provides meat,
hands can convert into furniture like cabinets,
milk, and wool
chairs, and tables. A house can also be built
from wood.
THE MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES

As mentioned, raw materials + tools + skills would produce man made resources.

Different firms came into the picture, each offering different products and
services. With the existence of such firms, it can only succeed through proper
management and utilization of all respective resources, including manpower.

But what is Management?

THE MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCE
Management
➤The synchronization of the activities of a firm in order to accomplish
definite goals and intentions.
➤Management consists of the interconnecting tasks of designing
corporate policies and procedures toward the realization of an
organization's ventures.

Environmental Management
➤Administrative functions that expound, execute, and observe the environmental
guidelines and procedures of a firm in an attempt to manage impact on the environment to
protect and conserve natural resources.
➤Environmental management centers on the development of human welfare for existing
and future generations.
➤It also involves People, Process, and Discipline
Why Study Environmental Management?

1. To discover, understand, and be trained on how to utilize techniques for

evaluating and supervising the environmental consequences of both public
and private sector organizations.
2. To individual, specialized and research expertise on how to contribute to
the development of our environment.
3. To implement certain management tools and methodology that can be
applied in relevance to perspective business in accordance to the rules and
laws set forth by the government in all levels (local, regional, national, and
global).
4. To understand that environmental management is a conscientious effort
of all concerned in bringing together in harmony all efforts to tackle
environmental crises that affect the entire planet.

Current condition of our environment

We cannot refute the fact that our environment is continuously changing. The older
generation, our ancestors, can certainly attest to the changes they have seen and
compare the past and present condition of our environment.
Change is inevitable.
As much as we want progress, there are things that will surely be sacrificed.
Therefore, there is a great need to address this concern as well if we truly want to
experience and enjoy true progress not only for us living in the present, but more so
for our children and the future generation.
There are certainly means and ways to prevent negative impact on our environment.
People must be educated and be disciplined in doing even the smallest things for the
environment. It is a collaborative effort and should not be left in the hands of the
government or the environmentalists alone. Individual proper disposal of trash is an
example. The little things that we do every day would somehow have an impact on
our environment, whether good or bad.
Current condition of our environment
The public needs to be conscious of the kinds of environmental setbacks and challenges our
world is dealing with.
What could you possibly do to contribute in improving our present environmental condition? If
not us, then who; If not now, then when? Moreover, how could we unite and adhere
collectively as one nation to support our planet and create a better dwelling for everyone to
inhabit? We must act now before it's too late.

ENVIRONMENTAL STATUS EVALUATION
➣Also known as Environmental Assessment
➣Process of estimating and calculating significant short term and long- term
outcomes and consequences of any implemented undertakings with respect
to its impact on the environment.
➣After thorough evaluation, certain steps must now be considered to reduce
or alleviate such effects to somehow compensate for whatever damages
incurred.
➣Impact Assessment is based on Environmental Assessment
Environmental Legislation and Administration

➣The Environmental Administration

Environmental Management System (EMS)
An environmental management structure brings collectively in sync the people,
capital, devices, resources, techniques, and mechanisms used to deal with
environmental concerns at a facility or in an organization.
An Environmental Management System objective is an overall goal arising
from the environmental policy statement established by the organization.
An Environmental Management System target is a detailed measurable
performance requirement related to the objective.
Example: Objective: Reduce transportation congestion
Target : Improve roads and bridges within five years.
Target : Replace old vehicles running for at least 10 years
Target: Invest in public transportation like LRT, MRT
Environmental Management System (EMS)

A WORLD FULL OF JUNK!

An objective of EMS is to reduce environmental impacts.

Increased environmental concerns have created a need for
environmental friendly practices with waste management.

Example: Waste segregation - dividing waste into:

a. Organic waste
b. Dry waste
c. Reject waste
Waste Segregation Guidelines
Organic Waste Dry Waste Reject Waste
Kitchen Waste Plastic Sanitary Waste
Vegetable/fruit, peels, Cooked, Plastic covers, Pet bottles, Diapers/sanitary, napkins, Mia,
food/leftovers, Plastic cups, Plastic and Bandages, Condoms, Used
Eggshells,vChicken/fish, bones wrappers tissues, Used syringes and
Rotten fruits and, veggies, Tea Metal Injection vials
bags/coffee, grinds and Leaf Canned foods

-purchase only what is

REDUCE needed as oppose to what is
desired.
-limit packaging materials
-buy reusable products
REUSE - consider looking for new ways to
make use of old stuff that are
about to be thrown away.

-Most items made of paper, glass,

RECYCLE rubber, plastics, and metal may have a
good use in other ways. Be creative. Use
your imagination and save money.
REDUCE
➣Reduction means to make something smaller. How? By
using something less often ensuing in a smaller quantity of
waste.
➣Source reduction is reducing waste prior to you actually
purchasing it. Decrease unnecessary, useless, and wasteful
purchases. How?
REDUCE
By being practical. Buy things as needed; not as wanted.
Avoid impulse buying. You don't have to purchase a
commodity just because it is on "sale" unless you're
absolutely certain that you would have a use for it
sometime.Food items, however, are considered essential.
Therefore, buying it when it is on sale does not count for
what others call as "guilty pleasures" unless, of course, it
falls under the category of "junk food."

➣Conservation is the crucial part of waste reduction. Utilizing natural resources sensibly and
using below or less than the usual to circumvent waste.
➣We can reduce the amount of trash by selecting what rubbish to throw away.
➣Reduce junk by donating surplus and unwanted stuff to family, friends, neighbors, or even to
charity.
REUSE
➣Reuse means to use an item again more than once
➣Some items in our respective homes and places of
work may be used several times. These things have
reusable qualities.
➣It may be reused for the same purpose (conventional
reuse) or to perform a different function (creative
reuse). All it needs is a good imagination and a pair of
creative hands to make use of some old items before
considering of throwing it in trash. It not only saves
money but it could also create some personal touch and
making it one of a kind.
➣Instead of using plastic bags, try using eco- friendly
shopping bags. This is widely used now in big malls and
everyone is encouraged to do their share of discipline in
going green and help save Mother Earth.
RECYCLE
➣Recycle is to transform or convert materials/waste into reusable
items. It subjects objects through a process or treatment that permits
them to be used again, usually for a different purpose.
➣It should be distinguished from reuse. Recycling is the breaking
down of second-hand, old items to create raw materials for the
construction of new products.
RECYCLE

It is not Recycling if no one buys or makes use the end (recycled)

product.

BENEFITS OF RECYCLING

✓ Monetary Benefits
 Discover how to turn
scrap into money
 Craft ideas to sell
 Make money selling
things you never thought
people would actually buy
BENEFITS OF RECYCLING

✓ Management of Resources
 To uphold and sustain
ecological balance for
supporting life
 To safeguard different types
of natural resources and
biodiversity for the present
and future generations.
BENEFITS OF RECYCLING

✓ Energy Reduction
 The use of recycled things slashes down energy use
 Much of is produced with gas and fuel that affects the
quality of air

✓ Community Development
 Happens when people come together, get
involved, share ideas, encourage and support
each other.
BENEFITS OF RECYCLING

✔ Provision of Work
 The purchasing and consumption of recycled items
creates demand for more recycled products, thereby
increasing production and opening doors for additional
manpower that are paid to manufacture something new
out of the recycled items.
✓ Ecological Security
 Reduces pollution
RECYCLING IS A CHOICE...
While many of us definitely wants new and finer things in life, it does not mean
that using recycled products diminishes our way of living or how we look at
our possessions. Some of the recycled products are truly works of art. What
others think as trash can turn out to be something valuable to others.

Based on the discussion presented in this chapter, it is very obvious that there
is a need to reduce, reuse, and recycle. It's not asking too much to get
involved and participate in this campaign for a better environment. After all,
we are part of it and we all want to live in a safe and healthy environment.

Those "rubbish" won't recycle on its own. We have to make that choice. We
need to make it happen. Let it be part of our system 'til it becomes a habit and
a way of life.
