Report on Levels of Biodiversity
What is Biodiversity?
• Biodiversity literally means diversity of life that exists on earth. The
term biodiversity was given by Walter G. Rosen (1985) as a compound
word for the term ‘Biological Diversity’ originally proposed by
Lovejoy (1980) as the number of species in a community.
• Biodiversity is the biological variety and variability of life on Earth.
Biodiversity is a measure of variation at the genetic, species, and
ecosystem level.
Levels of Biodiversity
• Level 1 – Ecosystem Diversity
• Level 2 – Species Diversity
• Level 3 – Genetic Diversity
Level 1 : EcoSystem Diversity
• Ecosystem diversity deals with the variations in ecosystems within a
geographical location and its overall impact on human existence and the
environment.
• Ecosystem diversity addresses the combined characteristics of biotic
properties (biodiversity) and abiotic properties (geodiversity).
• Some examples of ecosystems that are rich in diversity are:
1. Deserts
2. Forests
3. Marine ecosystems
4. Rainforests
5. Tundra
Level 2 : Species Diversity
• Species diversity is defined as the number of different species present in an
ecosystem and relative abundance of each of those species.
• It is a measurement of biological diversity to be found in a specific ecological
community. Some examples of species diversity are –
• Different species of fishes.
• Different species of trees.
• Different species of flowers.
Level 3 : Genetic Diversity
• Genetic diversity is the variability or variety within animal, group, or
assembly. It is the total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic
makeup of a species, it ranges widely from the number of species to
differences within species and can be attributed to the span of survival
for a species.
• Some examples of genetic diversity are: -
1. The population of humans consists of individuals with different
physical traits.
2. Different plant breeds are crossbred to get the desired trait in a
particular plant
3. Different breeds of dogs. Dogs are selectively breed to get the
desired traits.
Advantage of Biodiversity
• Conservation of biological diversity leads to
conservation of essential ecological diversity to
preserve the continuity of food chains.
• The genetic diversity of plants and animals is
preserved.
• It ensures the sustainable utilisation of life support
systems on earth.
• It provides a vast knowledge of potential use to the
scientific community.
Disadvantage of Biodiversity
• More biodiversity means more of animals and plants hence the
population and living of humans can be restricted.
• Excess of wild animals can harm the humans.
• The establishment of the forest cause cost.
• The loss of biodiversity has two significant impacts on human health
and the spread of disease.
• It increases the number of disease-carrying animals in local
populations.
