ESP 8 Teacher Review” • What is Family? • What are the three major stages of a family? • What are the classification of family according to degree of authority. • What are the classification of family according to structural organization? Lesson 3: Functions and Duties of Family Members
There is no such penalty for error and folly as to see
one’s children suffer for it. There is no such reward for a well-spent life as to see one’s children well started in life, owing to their parent’s good health, good principles, fixed character, good breeding, and in general the whole outfit that enables them to fight the battle of life with success. -W. G. Summer • Raising a family is one of life’s noblest undertakings. It is also one of the most difficult things to do. It is not only bearing children but caring for them as well. • It is the duty of the parents to raise their children to be functional citizens. Parents should be role models to their children, so they too will strive to do their best. • With more women holding full-time jobs, responsibilities at home need to be shared and communicated among family members. • Marriage and family life require partnership. • One of the responsibilities of the married couple is the management of the household. • Getting the entire family to help with the housework is challenging. Each member should understand his/her role in family life. Role of the Father • He is usually the provider of the family. ▫ He works hard to provide his family with its basic needs. • He is the leader of the family. ▫ He speaks for the family and makes the ultimate decision on matters that affect the welfare of the family. • He is the disciplinarian. ▫ He establishes and implements reasonable rules and limitations in the home. • He is the spiritual head of the home. ▫ He leads the children toward their spiritual development and upliftment. • He protects the family. ▫ He sees to it that his family is secure and free from danger. • He teaches by example. ▫ Parents teach the best when their children see them as role models/ Role of the Mother • The Mother is the light and guide of the family, the strength of the husband, the inspiration of the children. • She takes care of the household. • She takes care of her husband’s and children’s needs. • She assumes the responsibility of preparing the children for adulthood. • She is the treasurer. She budgets the income and allocates for all the family expenditures. • She provides a home environment in which the family members are happy, secure, and contented. • She takes care of the children and teaches them good values. She is the guiding light of the home. • She assists in earning a living, thus, adding incomes to the family. She has become an equal partner in the economic support of the family. The following functions can be shared by both the father and the mother. • As heads of the family. A mother and father can both play this role by conferring with each other on certain family decisions. • As providers of the family. Both mother and father can work hard to provide for the family’s needs. • As leaders in the family. Both mother and father can speak for the family, working harmoniously together so as not to overpower or dominate the other. Together they can lead the children to a direction that would bring out the best in them and make the family help the community, the church, and the nation as a whole. • As disciplinarian. Mother and father can both establish and implement reasonable rules and limitations in the home. • As spiritual heads of the home. Mother and father must both attend to the children’s spiritual development and upliftment. • As protector’s of the family. Both husband and wife must see to it that the family is secure and free from danger. • As role models. The mother and father must teach by example by their actions and behavior, by their very lives. They can teach best when their children see them as role models. As a famous Filipino adage puts it, “Kung ano ang puso, siya ang bunga”. The Children are the fruit of their parents love for each other. • They’re the joy of their parents. • They help in doing household chores and support their father and mother whenever, however, and wherever possible. • They are sent to school to learn and become productive members of the society and/or become worthy members of the family or the “pride” of the nation. • As they grow up, they can share in decision making in the family. They may also be consulted-asked about their observation and recommendation Response-Abilities/Responsibilities • The Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines provides that the family is the basic social unit of society. The family is responsible for providing what its members need for their physical health, dignity, development of self- concept or self-worth, and potentialities. • Our family is a source of the material and nonmaterial values that shape our life. Peschke (1994:543-545) Summarizes the basic functions of the family as: • Primary Economic Community – As an economic unit, the family provides for a person’s everyday needs. Such as food, shelter, and clothing. The task of housekeeping is a part of this function. • Primary Educational Unit – Children depend primarily on the education within the family as their first school. The family also lays the foundation for other virtues, such as readiness to help, consideration, fairness, sincerity, and diligence.
• Primary Spiritual community – family is a
household of faith. It passes on spiritual belief, cultivates religious traditions, and translates religious convictions into daily life. From familiaris Consortio 39, which are exhortations of Pope John Paul II on the family in the modern world, the church emphasizes four general functions or tasks for the family: • Forming a Community of persons rooted in love – the love between husband and wife, between parents and children, between brothers and sisters, relatives and members of the household is given life and dynamism that leads to more intense communion that is the foundation and soul of the community of marriage and family. • Serving life – The family serves and actualizes the original blessing of the creator – that of transmitting by procreation the divine image from person to person. • Participating in the development of society – The family as the first and vital cell of society has organic links with the latter. It is in the family that citizens come to life and it is within the family that they find the first school of the social virtues that are the animating principles of the existence and development of society itself. Sharing in the life and mission of the church • The family is placed at the service of the building of God’s kingdom in history by participating in the life and mission of the church. Activity: • Think of ways by which you can show your parents and the members of your family that you appreciate their roles in shaping your life. Write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper. ASSIGNMENT!!!
