JOURNAL CLUB- BACKGROUND

• First Journal club – 1875 – Sir William Osler (medical

only)
• Two main functions of Journal Clubs:
- Keep nurses & students up to date on clinical research.
- Improve clinical nurses ability to evaluate published
research critically.
• Journal Clubs play key roles in EBP, Research, Nursing
Education & Patient Care.
WHAT IS JOURNAL?

• The word journal which is originated by Late Latin word

‘diurnalis’ which means ‘daily’. The journal which have
several meaning these are as follows.
• Journal which is described as a record of an event or
business.
• A newspaper or other periodical, in the literal sense of one
published each day.
• A daily record of news and events of a personal nature.

TYPES OF JOURNALS
INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
SERIAL NUMBER (ISSN)
• An International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an eight-
digit serial number used to uniquely identify a serial publication,
such as a magazine The ISSN is especially helpful in distinguishing
between serials with the same title. ISSN are used in ordering,
cataloging, interlibrary loans, and other practices in connection with
serial literature.
• The ISSN system was first drafted as an International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) international standard in 1971 and
published as ISO 3297 in 1975. ISO subcommittee TC 46/SC 9 is
responsible for maintaining the standard.
• When a serial with the same content is published in more than one
media type, a different ISSN is assigned to each media type. For
example, many serials are published both in print and electronic
media. The ISSN system refers to these types as print ISSN (p-
ISSN) and electronic ISSN (e-ISSN), respectively Conversely, as
defined in ISO 3297:2007, every serial in the ISSN system is also
assigned a linking ISSN (ISSN-L), typically the same as the ISSN
assigned to the serial in its first published medium, which links
together all ISSNs assigned to the serial in every medium.
WHAT IS VOLUME AND ISSUE?

• Volume typically refers to the number of years the

publication has been circulated.
• Ex: VOLUME 03-2018
• Issue refers to how many times that periodical has been
published during that year.
• Ex: ISSUE 03 ( OCT-NOV-DEC)
WHAT IS ISSN?

• An International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an

eight-digit serial number used to uniquely identify a serial
publication.
• In which two types of identification serial publication
number can see.
• ISSN (print)
• ISSN(online)
IMPACT FACTOR

• Impact factor is the calculation of yearly average number

of citations that articles published in the last 2 years in a
given journal.
• Formula: y= Citations(y-1) + Citations(y-2)
Publication(y-1) + Publication(y-2)
• An indexed journal means that the journal has gone through and
passed a review process of certain requirements done by a journal
indexer. Basically, every institution can be an indexer but in the
academic world, an indexer should be one who is trusted and
reputable in doing such a job.
• Non-indexed (SCI/SCOPUS) journals contents are mostly not
authentically peer reviewed. Publishing scientific works without
peer reviewed causes more harm to the scientific society than no
publication at all. Publish less but they should be in reputed indexed
journals.
• Here are some of the most reputed journal indexing agencies
where you can check the indexing and apply for it.
• Google Scholar.
• Scopus.
• PubMed.
• EBSCO.
• IJIFACTOR.
• EMBASE.
• DOAJ.
• ISI Indexing
Journal Impact
• Impact Factor - What is it?; Why use it?
• The impact factor (IF) is a measure of the frequency with
which the average article in a journal has been cited in a
particular year. It is used to measure the importance or rank of a
journal by calculating the times it's articles are cited.
• How Impact Factor is Calculated?
• The calculation is based on a two-year period and involves
dividing the number of times articles were cited by the number
of articles that are citable.
• Calculation of 2010 IF of a journal:
• A = the number of times articles published in 2008 and 2009 were
cited by indexed journals during 2010.
• B = the total number of "citable items" published in 2008 and 2009.
• A/B = 2010 impact factor
• See Introducing the Impact Factor and Reliability of the Impact
Factor for more information.
• The Impact Factor is reported in Journal Citation Reports (JCR)
• Cite Score, which is similar to the IF but is based on a 4-year period .
