Success or Death: A Correlational Study Between the Level of the

Academic Stress and Suicide Ideation Among Students of Engineering

Department at Urdaneta City University

PRESENTOR:

PINEDA R.
INTRODUCTION
Engineering students' study level is notoriously
stressful and competitive, requiring excessive hours of
studying, learning, and practice. (Ali Siddiqui et al,
2020). According to Siddiqui, Fatima, and Mossa
(2018), Engineering students have a higher suicidal
thought compared to other courses like medicine.
Having 82.87% of depressed students from
engineering courses was seen in the study.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Lazarus and Folkman’s Transactional Stress Theory (1984)
Described stress as an imbalance among perceived external or internal
demands and perceived personal and social resources to manage with them.
Two cognitive assessment processes can be identified also known as a
primary appraisal and secondary appraisal
Interpersonal Theory of Suicide’s developed by Thomas Joiner
Suicidal desire develops when people experience prolonged feelings of
burdensomeness and a lack of belonging.
RESEARCH PARADIGM
               Independent Variable   Dependent Variable
The Level of Suicide Ideation among the
student of the Engineering Department
Academic Stress from Urdaneta City University.

- Personal Inadequacy -Suicide Ideation

- Fear of Failure -Death Ideation
-Personal Difficulties -Loss of Personal and Social
-Teacher-Student Relationship Worth
-Inadequate Learning Facility -Perceive a meaning of Life
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The study aimed to determine the relationship between academic stress and
suicidal ideation among students of the Engineering Department at Urdaneta
City University. It specifically answers the following:
1. What is the level of academic stress of the Engineering students at Urdaneta
City University students?
2. What is the level of suicidal ideation of the  Engineering students at
Urdaneta City University students?
3. Is there a relationship between academic stress and suicidal ideation of the
Engineering students at Urdaneta City University?

HYPOTHESIS/RESEARCH
PREDICTION
 Ho: there is no significant relationship between academic stress and

suicidal ideation of the Engineering students at Urdaneta City University.

 Ha: there is a significant relationship between academic stress and suicidal

ideation of the Engineering students at Urdaneta City University.

RESEARCH DESIGN
The researcher will utilize a correlational design to determine the
level of academic stress and suicidal ideation. A "correlational
design" refers to a scientific way of determining the relationship
between variables without modifying or controlling the different
variables (Bhandari, 2021). The research will also look into the
strength and direction of the Level of Academic stress and Suicidal
ideation whether it correlates or not among the students under the
College of Engineering Department.
POPULATION AND LOCALE OF THE
STUDY
The study will be conducted at Urdaneta City University, College of
Engineering Department.
DATA GATHERING TOOL
The researchers designed a survey questionnaire wherein the students
of Urdaneta City University in the College of Engineering
Department are under the scope of the research. The questionnaire
demonstrates how the students perceive their experiences on the
research subject. In designing the questionnaire, it was determined
that students had vast differences in terms of learning. The
researchers also use the GSIS or Geriatric Suicide Ideation Scale by
Heisal, et.al., (2006) and the Academic Stress Scale by Kim (1970)
for them to categorize and scale the measurement of the level of both
variables.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The researcher used a survey questionnaire to gather the information of the
participant. The survey questionnaire has three parts. The first part requested the
respondents' profile; the researcher created the profile tool; that determined the
respondents' course and year level. The second part is the tool to determine the
level of academic stress and suicidal ideation of the Engineering Students of
Urdaneta City University using the level of agreement. The level of agreement
allows respondents to answer more precisely on the statement if it's Strongly
Disagree (SD), Disagree (D), Agree (A), and Strongly Agree (SA). Lastly, the
statement that answered using the level of agreement by the respondent.
