POP
 POP is short for Post Office Protocol
 It is an application layer protocol.
 POP version 3, is simple and limited in functionality .
 The client POP3 Software is installed on the recipient computer, the server
POP3 software is installed on the mail server.
 Mail access starts with the client when the user needs to download email
from the mail box on the mail server. The client opens a connection to the
server on TCP port 110. It then sends its user name and password to access
the mailbox. The user can then list and retrieve the mail messages, one by
one.
POP3
 POP3 has two modes:
The delete mode and
The Keep mode.
 In the delete mode, the mail is deleted from the mailbox
after each retrieval, In the keep mode, the mail remains in
the mailbox after retrieval.
 The delete mode is normally used when the user is
working at permanent computer and can save and organize
mail after reading or replying.
 The keep mode is normally used when the user access the
mail away from permanent computer. The mail is read but
kept in the system for later retrieval and organising.

Using this pop services, the user can use their mail
account from one host computer. They are not able to access
mails through different devices simultaneously.
PURPOSE

 It is message access protocol.


 Itenables the clients to receive or download the
emails from their remote mail server.
 POP version3(POP3) is the most popularly used
version
WORKING

 To retrive a message from the mail server-


-Client establishes a TCP connection using port 110.
-Client identifies itself to the server.
-Client issues a series of POP3 Commands.
CHARACTERISTICS OF POP
 POP is a pull protocol
 POP uses TCP at the transport layer.
 POP uses port number 110.
 POP uses persistent TCP connections.
 POP is a connection oriented protocol.
 POP is as in-band protocol.(Control passes data on the same
connection)
 POP is a stateful protocol until the mail is downloaded as
well as stateless across sessions.
ADVANTAGES

 Since all mails resides on your pc, you can read your mail
without being logged on to the internet.
 Opening attachments is a quick and painless process because
they are already on your pc.
 There are often no size limits on the email you send or
receive.
 All messages are stored on your hard drive on your own
computer. You only connect to net to download and post
your messages from your inbox.
DISADVANTAGES

 Opening attachments is a quick and painless process,


unless the attachment has a virus payload in it.
 All messages are stored on your hard drive eating up what
is sometimes very valuable space.
 Email folders can become corrupted and sometimes lost
forever. Recovering is often a painful exercise.
