NATURAL DISASTER
that frequently hit in the Philippines
Typhoon or Tropical Cyclone
Typhoon Yolanda, massive and highly destructive
storm in the North Pacific Ocean that affected Palau,
the Philippines, Vietnam, and China during early
November 2013. The tropical cyclone produced high
winds, coastal storm surges, heavy rains, and
flooding in the land areas over which it passed. By
far the worst-hit region was the central Philippines,
where the storm produced widespread devastation
and killed thousands of people.

2
FLOODINGS
• Because of the monsoons, the Philippines has a fairly well-
defined wet season. In addition, there are other precipitation-
producing weather phenomena: tropical cyclones,
thunderstorms, the ITCZ, frontal passages, etc.

These can generate large amounts of precipitation. In

combination with each other or, in particular, with the
monsoon, these phenomena are capable of bringing intense and
excessive precipitation. Under certain conditions, a surfeit of
rainfall results in a potentially disastrous phenomenon which is
FLOOD.

3
LANDSLIDES
• The Philippines is prone to various natural hazards,
thus occurrence of landslides is inevitable.
Awareness and preparedness are the most effective
prevention and mitigation measures against possible
What are landslides? threats of landslide in the community.
A landslide is the mass movement of rock, soil, and debris down
a slope due to gravity. It occurs when the driving force is greater
than the resisting force. It is a natural process that occurs in
steep slopes. The movement may range from very slow to rapid.

VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS

• The volcanoes of the Philippines are produced at

the junction of the Philippines tectonic plate and the
Eurasian plate. ... Lahars (mud flows) are very
common in the Philippines, because the archipelago
has often heavy rains.
• Last time Taal Volcano erupted in early January
2020 affecting more than 736,000 people in
CALABARZON (Region IV-A), Central Luzon
(Region III) and National Capital Region (NCR),
and leading to an evacuation of more than 135,000
people, damage to infrastructure and livelihoods,
and disruption of essential services,

EARTHQUAKE Click icon to add chart

Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground

suddenly breaks along the fault. Since it lies along
the Pacific Ring of Fire, the country has frequent seismic
and volcanic activities.
A fault is a planar fracture in a volume of rock, across which
there has been significant displacement along
the fractures as a result of earth movement. This earth
movement is what we called tectonic forces that
compress the land.

6
DROUGHT
Drought is a prolonged period of abnormally low
rainfall; a shortage of water resulting from this.
The Philippines has been affected by a strong El-
Niño-related dry spell since December 2015, which
has hit food production.
According to the Department of Social Welfare and
Development, 676,465 people have been affected by
drought in the following areas of Mindanao:
Cotabato, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat in
Soccsksargen and Maguindanao in the Autonomous
Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The
Zamboanga peninsula in Mindanao has been facing
severe water shortagesion (GEO Hive, 2015)

TERRORISM
Defined as "criminal acts intended or
calculated to provoke a state of terror in the
general public, group of
persons or particular persons for political
purposes are in any circumstance
unjustifiable, whatever the
considerations of a political, philosophical,
ideological, racial, ethnic, religious, or any

Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), New People's Army
(NPA), Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom
Fighters (BIFF) and
Maute Group also known as Islamic State of
Lanao are some of the most notable terrorist
groups in the
Philippines.
