II. Writing Matching Type Test
Varieties of Matching Type Test
1. Balanced Variety – the number of items is
equal to the number of options
2. Unbalance Variety – There are unequal
numbers in two columns
- characterized by the use of distracters
which usually leaves a number of unused
options
II. Writing Matching Type Test
Varieties of Matching Type Test

words or other types of materials into their
proper categories. The students are asked to
classify each specific word use in the context.
Distracters are seldom used because all terms
are properly classified.

meaningful by itself and should
present a definite problem.

significant learning outcomes require it,
and stress/highlight the negative words
for emphasis.

grammatically consistent with the stem
of the item.

correct or clearly best answer.

6. Items used to measure

understanding should contain some
novelty, but not too much.

plausible/attractive.

8. Verbal associations between the stem

and the correct answer should be
avoided.

alternatives/options should not
provide a clue to the answer.

logically.
III. Writing Multiple Choice Test

each of the alternative positions and
approximately equal number of
times but in random order.

alternatives on the same page.
